Bumping to keep this thread alive.
And another bump, because every single configuration I’ve tried (5.1 or not) yields quiet audio, which then gets turned up, which then blows out my ear drums when I change to another app.
Plex and PlexAmp are both affected to this day.
Good point.

Bump. Ridiculous this hasn’t been fixed. I tried playing a movie at full volume and could make out only the loudest scenes.
Really surprised this has still not been fixed! Guess it’s hard, but with the amount of people having problem with this, it’s a pity the Plex team hasn’t made any effort to keep us informed on how they are trying to solve it. Just a simple “we hear you guys, and we’re working on it” would go a long way…
I have a Roku TV, and when running Plex on it I have to really crank up the volume just to get normal sound. However, I recently put a Fire Stick in that same TV and Plex volume is fine there.
hey plex team, we’ll never let this die, until it’s fixed. i dont understand what is so complicated.
here’s how you, a plex dev, would recreate the issue:
- open a movie on literally any player but plex
- enjoy that maximum volume. see how nice and loud it is? maybe too loud, lets bring the volume to %70
- open the same movie on plex
- do not enjoy that quiet volume
- attempt to raise the volume to max on your speakers and player and everywhere, while sadly and slowly realizing that this is just the max volume and it sounds like someone’s trying to talk to you on a windy day through a wall
- reflect on your life choices, and what brought you to this sad state of affairs
- vote on the feature request, and hunker down. you’ve got work to do, baby!
tl;dr make louder volumes please

Bump.
lol i think they made it worse with the last update
I agree with you. As a testing new viewer I have most of the devices. I see MANY POSTS on all the devices, Firestick, xbox, pc, windows. I have them all. The one thing I do not see is the proof.
Here is the proof. PLEX IF YOU WANT MORE CUSTOMERS PLEASE FIX THIS SOUND.
1 - when watching almost any content moveies mostly I hear VERY LOW VOLUME.
2 - when a commercial in the content pops up (yes you have to pay for it I understand) the volume which has not been changed comes out as LOUD VOLUME. There is the proof. no technology issues with the customers equipment.
3 - I have almost if not all the platforms you are on. THEY ALL DO IT. nothing to do with technology of our device or settings. IT IS THE PLEX content playing.
Can you fix and as I am in IT industry (years of it) I am happy to assist your tech support staff.
I can answer questions and try different things but the ultimate test is watching content then going to commercials and back.
I have xbox, firesticks, android boxes, windows computers, mac (old), ipads, android tablets etc. I am happy to test any alpha or beta fixes if you wish willing to install and if it fails I can uninstall no problem.
This has got to the point my family hates watching Movies on Plex. So if we are going to watch at home I start EMBY up… I am sick of this problem.
I have tried everyone’s idea…
But where the hell is plex support?? Why have they dont fixed this?
I also experience this problem. It can be very annoying at times. Especially with phone notifications coming in and piercing your ears.
But for the love of god, people. The tone in this topic (and other topics as well) is not one to use if you want something to get done by someone you do not own or pay (properly).
The frustration is clear, but this is not helping anyone get motivated to fix the problem.
And also this constant implying of “you better fix it fast, or I move to Emby/Kodi/Jellyfin”. I can’t imagine any dev thinking any differently than “fine, gtfo then”.
I just got a shield tv and i have to legit put the volume to almost 90% just to get decent volume on the plex app. For reference netflix is good at about 15%
I have the same problem and I know this won’t help most of you but if you happen to have a Fire TV I have a workaround
I use a Fire Cube 4k (2nd Gen)
In the Fire TV settings go into
- Display & Sounds
- Audio
- Advanced Audio (this is buried)
Volume Leveler ON
Dialogue Enhancer ON
They are off by default
I don’t know what other Fire Devices have this option but trust me, it’s worth taking a look
My content is unwatchable without this setting
Having sound issues too. plex 100% on shield/tv . Were as YouTube on shield tv is 50%. Tried various settings passthrough and alike. But the Volume scale seems as if lowered. Huged boost on the shield doesn’t do anything either.
worst part… you cant even turn down the volume for the rest of the apps… cause theres always a new app running and you get thrown to the roof when it makes a sound… at least if plex volume was too high we could just turn it down… but like this is impossible
i wonder if theres a third party app that can boost the plex volume since plex team wont fix this
Bought my Dad a Roku Soundbar Pro and it lets you set the volume per app. Awesome. Just wish they’d figure out how to add it to the regular Roku’s.
Chris
So, I did some investigating because I’ve seen some conflicting information in this thread since I’ve posted. Volume is low across the board compared to any other program on my computer, and that’s while using Plex Web, Plexamp, etc. It’s low on Plex for Android and it’s low on Plexamp on my phone. HOWEVER, when downmixing from 5.1, it’s even quieter. This coincides with all the posts talking about it being a 5.1 downmixing issue, but that just seems to magnify the issue.
hi to any devs that read this thread.
i am happy and willing to do any testing, provide any logs, or run any troubleshooting steps to deal with this.
please help
