LG and Firetv Subtitles not working without transcoding?

Hello guys,

I am currently facing this siuation:

It seems I am having 2 people making my server to transcode. My question is: Is that because they do not support SRT subtitles? In that case, aren’t webos LG TVs and firetv 4k capable of SRT subtitles?

Kind regards

Regarding the Plex LG webOS app:

  • Enabling image based subtitles (PGS & VOBSUB) results in a video transcode.
  • If the audio is transcoding, enabling any subtitle format results in a video transcode.
  • If the audio is direct playing, text based subtitles (SRT, VTT) direct play.

SSA/ASS subtitles:

  • If Burn Subtitles = Automatic, enabling SSA/ASS subtitles results in a video transcode.
  • If Burn Subtitles = Image Format Only, SSA/ASS subtitles direct play, but formatting information is lost (color, location, etc).

Regarding the FireTV, that should not be happening according to the product announcement.

Why is the video transcoding? Is that a remote user with bandwidth limitations?

From the Plex for Android 8.0.0 announcement in April 2020:

WHATS NEW:

  • Player: direct play subtitles even when transcoding audio or video.

Why is that? This sounds like real nonsense.

To keep the video and subtitles in sync with each other.

IIRC, it has to do with the transport protocol used between the server & the TV. If the subtitles are sent as a separate stream, their timing can drift relative to the video stream. Burning the subtitles into the video stream ensures the timing is correct.

I am sorry but that sounds like nonsense. When the sound is been transcoded it is still in sync with the video, which is much more important because you will notice inmediatly if the sound is not properly sync when people talk.

And then Plex is the only one doing all these shenanigans with subtitles. The other software we all know which one it is works correctly.

Thanks for that

However, its a pain that if audio is being transcoded, the full movie will be also. This will cause harm on my end, since I always have SRT on, just in case there is any scene in a different language.

On the other hand, about the firetv, up to what I am aware that client has no quality limitation, and from the screenshot I attached, I can see it says Original, in the quality report.

Pull your server logs and attach to the thread. They might show something.

It seems my logs were cleared, not from that day already :frowning:

Hello,

I was somehow able to “reproduce” the issue. I got a firetv to test on my local network and one from outside of it. These were the results:

From inside my network I was able to get directplay on everything:

Under bitrate 11mbps as it should be.

However from outside the network, I got this other thing:

Maxing my CPU usage when even HW transcoding is activated, and hitting 82mbps of network, which makes literally no sense. Not able to directplay on remote.

Here the logs:

com.plexapp.system.log (41.3 KB)
Plex Crash Uploader.log (195 Bytes)
Plex Media Server.log (854.0 KB)
Plex Transcoder Statistics.log (39.3 KB)
Plex Tuner Service.log (2.6 KB)
com.plexapp.agents.imdb.log (6.2 KB)

The first play was on local, and the second one on remote.

Please let me know if you see something wrong.

Kind regards

I have tried lowering the quality locally to check what happens with the transcode, however, everything seems to be fine:

No maxing CPU and HW acceleration is taking place, and no 80mbps of network needed

Literally losted on why is this happening

Can someone from plex team help in here?

Any update on here?

May I get some help in here?

On my 4K firestick, if I stream direct play subs don’t work, if I lower the quality of the stream, subs work fine. Been happening for weeks, didn’t seem a problem before.
