LG C1 - TrueHD Transcode - Channel placement wrong

Playing back content that is encoded with both TrueHD Atmos & standard 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks.

The TrueHD track is transcoded to EAC 5.1 but the front right channel actually comes from the surround right.

Confirmed by then playing the same elements with the Dolby Digital track (that is direct played). Distinct front right elements are placed correctly. (You need something very specific to notice this - e.g. Atmos test tracks).

This might well be a server issue rather than a player issue - especially if the transcoding is at fault.

Full playback chain is the LG C1 using eARC into a Marantz Cinema 40 AVR.

Not sure how else to get this confirmed in order for some action to be taken regarding this - thanks.

Thanks but no, sorry that’s no help - as it plays just fine - but it would, because it’s a DD+ file rather than TrueHD.

Just to clarify:-

TrueHD (with Atmos)
Transcoded to EAC 5.1
Front right moved to rear right.

DD+ (with Atmos)
Direct Play
No Issue

Real example from recent 4K release of Lifeforce (1985) if anyone is able to check: -

In the international cut at 1:02:31 as the guard knocks at the door. On the TrueHD track the knock comes from right rear, on the DD track front right. The Theatrical cut has the same scene at 0:52:10 but the door knock isn’t present anyway in that edition.

If I then switch to DLNA and play the same scene out in TrueHD through my Oppo UDP203 the knock is front right - and the whole soundstage ‘feels right’.

So for me this pins it down to either the transcoding engine OR the LG C1’s interpretation of what it’s getting fed.

I notice the same issue with TrueHD concerts, e.g. the recent Mr.Big - The Big Finish - soundstage is completely wrong through Plex for the same reason.

I’m just trying to create a test file from configuration test sweeps to show the issue - will link to it shortly.

OK, so this is more complex than I first imagined. I’ve created the small test file below which has 5 test sweeps FL / C / FR / SBL / SBR encoded as both 7.1 TrueHD Atmos and 7.1 DD+ Atmos.

In all cases you hear a chirp from front left before and after each sweep.

However - this plays fine for me on both codecs - so something has to be different about the Lifeforce (and other) tracks - somehow…

Ok, your two test files play just fine.

I’d be prepared to accept that I’ve encoded badly if it wasn’t for the fact that the Blu-ray player plays it just fine and only Plex has the issue!

I’m using the web interface, drive.google.com.

That was from my business version of Google Drive. It does look a bit different.

Still, in the personal version, right click on the file, you should see a Share option in the menu.

Since the test files (both my own and the one’s provided by @FordGuy61) all play fine with everything placed where it should be I’m beginning to clutch at straws.

As I’ve pointed out above the same file that shows the issue with Plex playback does NOT have the issue when DLNA’d to my bluray player - so something is going wrong somewhere.

Might it be possible that the transcoder has an issue with placement of Dolby Atmos objects - i.e. the bed-layer is fine but Atmos ‘objects’ aren’t being directed to the right channel when the transcoder deals with them ? What I’m thinking here is that just maybe some mixes are using objects rather than the bed layer for some main elements of the mix…

So with that in mind, has anybody got any example files that have definite ‘objects’ that could be tracked rather than just normal bed-layer stuff ? (I’ve been able to find DD+ examples but no TrueHD ones so far)
