LG WebOS app: Can't direct play some 4K HDR content

Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
Player Version#: LG WebOS app. Client version: 5.11.1. Platform version: 3.3.0.

I’ve tried my best to google a solution to no avail. My LG B6 with a Sony DN1080 surround receiver used to direct play anything I threw at it, as long as the audio track was not TrueHD and the subtitles not PGS (but rather SRT). But increasingly I come across HDR content that refuses to direct play and forces transcoding, even with compatible audio and disabled subtitles. Bizarrely, I can have a season of a TV show like The Boys where some episodes will direct play and others will not. The issue is also illustrated in the Harry Potter 4K HDR releases, where the first 4 titles in the franchise will direct play, but the last 4 will not. All files are lossless remuxes made with MakeMKV from the full Bluray image, but for some reason my TV accepts direct play of some movies, but not others (see image below). Can anyone help me spot the difference between the files or explain why this happens?

I get the following messages in my Media Server log:

Mar 24, 2021 00:59:26.215 [70876] DEBUG - [Transcode] MDE: Selected protocol hls; container: mpegts

The LG WebOS Plex app says:

Application disabled direct play.
Application disabled direct stream.
App cannot direct play this item.
Direct play is disabled.

To be clear it is the application that is disabling direct play, not me (the user). Direct play and direct stream are enabled in the settings.

Similarily, the LG DLNA player app will direct play most HDR files fine, but the “bad ones” will give the error:
Unable to play. The file cannot be recognized.

So the issue seems to be that the LG tv is incompatible with some HDR content and it forces a transcode, even though the files look very similar. I am trying to identify the issue so that I can make them compatible with direct play or avoid putting them in my library entirely.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Sometimes the client logs have additional information.

Set the Plex LG app to log to the server at the debug level.

Play the The Order of the Phoenix, then pull the logs.

See if the client log entries have any info on why the movie is transcoding.

Thanks for your reply! I tried doing as you suggested. I am not sure which log corresponds to the Plex LG App, though. I’ve looked at the log for “Plex DLNA Server”. The relevant lines seem to be these:

I don’t understand what they mean, however, or how to fix it. The Plex Media Server log said:

The info from the Plex app is in the Plex Media Server.log files.

Look for lines containing [Plex for LG].
Example (PGS subtitles enabled):
Mar 24, 2021 00:11:31.621 [0x7f58b1449700] INFO - [Plex for LG] [FordGuy61:pbh54favhmawhkt9eh1li4b4] Cannot direct play subtitles. Reason: Server required to burn subtitles

I’m not the best log reader, but if you’ll attach the log files I’ll take a look. You can just drag the entire .zip file into the compose window. At least attach the Plex Media Server.log file that has the entries from the LG.

Thank you so much for your reply again. Here is the Plex Media Server.log that I tried editing to only include information from the point of trying to playback the file in question. I edited out my personal information such as IP address. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
