Have Synology NAS DS918+, PlexPass, using Plex about 6 months now to build library of 1000+ TV Shows 260+ Movies, and 1000+ Songs. Starting to explore using Users to share specific content like Kids or Polish Movies for my Grandparents. Don’t want kids specific stuff or Polish language stuff visible in general user Library. Tried using Other Videos folder for storing Kids stuff and created Kids UID but can’t see anything in Other Videos library. Added Starwars folder from general Movie library to Kids UID and can see Starwars movies but not all the Kids Videos I ripped. Talking Curious George, Magic School Bus, etc. I seem to to be able to share just sub-folders of Movies or TV shows to specific users but can I create a Folder of various video files I want visible to just specific users? Ripping a bunch of Polish movies that I want my grandparents to see + general Movies but don’t want to subject everyone to having to Polish Movies listed in Movie Library. Created GP UID added movies library and Other Videos library but no luck to seeing just those Polish movies stored in Other Videos…
No need to use “Other Videos” – you can have tons of different “Movie” or “TV Show” libraries…
So why not have an organization like this?
Home
Movies <- your main library for movies
TV Shows <- your main library for tv-shows
Kids Movies <- library for movies for your kids
Kids Shows <- library for tv-shows for your kids
Polish Movies <- library for the movies you want to share with your grandparents
(I’ve been ignoring the music… but I’m sure you get the big picture )
Plex sets its own expectation of what to add to your library when scanning depending on the “media kind” you set for each library. So if you use a “Other Videos” folder and name the media in that according to the tv show naming convention, Plex won’t add any of those files (and vice versa).
That appears to be the reason why the library was adding your Star Wars movies but not the kids shows.
Therefore… keep an eye on keeping the different media types separate and not to mix tv shows or movies.
When you’ve setup your library like this it’ll also be quite easy to share. There’s no complicated mechanism… you’ll simply share entire libraries with each user.
When your kids grow older you can grant them access to your main movies but e.g. filter their access by content rating (sharing the library but only giving them access to G, PG or PG-13 content – and/or the respective Polish counterparts). https://support.plex.tv/articles/204232573-restricting-the-shares/
Thanks Tom, I get it but can’t quite figure it out…On the Synology NAS do I create new shares with the name Kids TV, Kids Movies, Polish Movies etc? To your point I kinda figured Other Videos with Movies/TV shows scanning might be a problem but I have a collection of Other Videos…there not quite movies and not quite TV Shows they are videos for Kids so naming and scanning is gonna be weird. I figured Other videos is for folks personal Home/vacation videos and they would not be scanned.
Just to give you some reference…
This is how media is stored on my Synology:
Videos
Home Videos
Movies
Shorts
TV Shows
Music
Within Plex, my libraries are configured like this:
Home
Movies [type: movie]
-> pointing at /Videos/Movies
TV Shows [type: tv shows]
-> pointing at /Videos/TV Shows
Music [type: music]
-> pointing at /Music
Shorts [type: movie]
-> pointing at /Videos/Shorts
Home Movies [type: other videos]
-> pointing at /Videos/Home Videos
If you have your (main) Movies library already pointing at /Videos you can also create a new Share within Synology. All you need is a separate folder path to point the respective Plex library at.
As for the types of videos… if the clips are not listed on TheTVDb.com or TheMovieDatabase.org you could indeed use Other Videos as media type for your library. In that case, Plex won’t match the videos against those sources… however if you have the files properly tagged and they are in mp4/m4v format, you can have Plex use that embedded metadata (instead of manually typing everything in from scratch.
Thanks your advice was SOLID Spot on! Polish movies worked out easy, but the kids stuff was harder because it was a mixture of movies, short videos, and maybe TV type stuff. I created a new Share with Kids TV shows and was able to fake the Magic School Bus into a Season 00 and just populate it with all the various MSB episodes as specials. The TV DB seemed to pattern match ok and thumbnails are there. The other stuff I have been playing around with trying to do similar faking but suspect I might need a Kids_Movie or Shorts as you describe to share kids Movies type for the remaining stuff. Have been playing around but wanted to circle back to say thanks your advice was solid!
