I need to replace my old Netgear NAS 314 as it’s just not cutting the mustard anymore, is there a way to transfer my existing Plex Library to the new NAS? But I can’t seem to find where Plex stores this library on my Ready NAS 314? or would it be easier to start off with a brand new library mind I do have 10,000 s songs and music videos to re-scan and sort
FYI, if the NAS still works OK for storage, one option is to keep the media on the NAS and move Plex Media Server to another system, such as a mini-PC running Linux or Windows.
Edit: Just remembered a previous exchange. You were considering a Terramaster if I remember correctly. That would definitely be an upgrade over the Netgear.
/apps/plexmediaserver/MediaLibrary/Plex Media Server/
I can’t seem to find this location on my old NAS as it must be hidden from view? Since I upgraded my NETGEAR firmware to the latest version 6.10.10 it has removed any means of further updating my Plex as they have removed the file uploader and also blocked access to SSH! Thanks Netgear!”
Yes I,m torn between a Terramaster or UGreen one on the UGREEN one there is no native Plex APP so you have to install using Docker APP apprently just waiting now on Amazon Prime deals next couple weeks, I’ve purchase my new WD RED 8TB HDDs and M.2 Drives, just need to purchase the main unit so any advice would be a real help on which way to go?
No SSH access? Wow. Maybe contact Netgear support or try r/NETGEAR on Reddit.
I’ve no hands-on with either UGREEN or Terramaster, so can’t offer any advice on which to choose. The posts I’ve noticed on the Plex forum for either one are “how do I” type posts, not complaining about the company or the hardware.
Running Plex on Docker will have a bit of a learning curve, but many people do so. Search for “Install Plex on Docker” or similar and you’ll see a lot of how to guides, videos, etc. I don’t use Docker because I have not had to do so. If I ever need it I’ll just find a good guide and dig in.
Just as an update I’ve upgraded my NAS I’ve gone for the DXP4800 Plus and running the Docker APP to enable me to run Plex Server in a Docker Container, as you can see from the above screen shot this works outstandly am I able to stream 3 streams at once, one being sent remote to my Iphone via 4G and transcoded by the built in graphics chip (HW) Transcoding works a treat and the CPU doesn’t even get in a sweat anymore so no more shuttering of my playback.
My question is anyone else running Plex Server in a Docker container? How easy is it to do an update of the Plex server when one becomes available?
Do I just download the latest Docker/Plex Image file and run it? This won’t erase all my library data? But hopefully, do an in-place upgrade? as it taken me quite a while to rebuild my library on this new NAS server, like several days! Thanks
There are different strategies for keeping container images up-to-date. For Plex, the easiest is probably just to use the Plex official image with either the “plexpass” or “public” tags. Using these tags specifically enables a feature where all one needs to do to update is restart the container.
Oh wow! That’s simple! Will have to try that once I get a notification of an update. With my old Netgear NAS, I had to download the file and upload it manually to the NAS, then install it, It was always a scary moment when the Plex app failed to start up with an error, and I had to reboot the NAS so things would start back up normally. Thanks for that.
