I recently got a new computer and decided to place my Plex server on it. I deleted the Plex software off my old computer and wiped it clean.
When setting up the new computer, I downloaded the Plex software and logged in expecting to set up my libraries again. There was no add libraries option in settings. Although it is normally there.
I have searched through all the Plex topics and post I could find. With no luck. I have spent some time in terminal trying to get it to delete certain com.plex files (that were not there to begin with) but no luck.
I have seen several threads with what seems like 30% success and tried all those solutions but they did not work.
Any suggestions from the Plex wizards out there? Thanks in advance.
I suppose you’ve used a Time Machine backup to setup your new Mac?
This will also restore the data directory of your old Plex Media Server. The troublesome part is that some of the machine identifiers used in that old configuration won’t match your new machine. Therefore Plex will consider it belongs to a different owner – you can still run it but you won’t be able to access the media or settings.
There’s basically two scenarios on how to deal with this:
You want to keep your original configuration
The support article linked below describes how to delete some critical keys from those old configuration files. This will keep the actual configuration but allow you to link the server to your account, giving you back your access.
You don’t mind losing your original configuration
If you don’t mind starting fresh… perform a full uninstall as per the instructions in the linked support article. If you restart the Plex Media Server afterwards, you will be presented with the installation wizard and asked to name / configure your server and create new libraries.
I would not be shy in building a new database, the new Plex Scanner for movies is extremely quick. Then of cause if you have a large collection of personal content with custom posters etc, it would be well worth trying to save your previous configuration. Great suggestions from Tom.
