Library view reverting to Recommended immediately

I’m having a problem with the latest AppleTV client app update that makes what previously was an annoying problem intolerable now.

What I want (in a perfect world) is a setting that would allow me to set the default view in every library to the “Library” view.

What I had instead (prior to the most recent update) was that I could go into each library on (for example) my mother’s app, setting the view to “Library” so she wouldn’t end up calling me later to ask why she couldn’t find a particular movie she wants to watch.

Side note: The Recommended view is, quite frankly, ridiculous in this context – I don’t need Plex to recommend my own content to me, and it only confuses certain family members who don’t know how to find “Moneyball,” “Casablanca,” or any of hundreds of other movies I have when it’s in any view other than “Library,” sorted alphabetically.)

So I’ve been ‘working around’ the problem by checking the settings in their apps when I visit. This setting (Library view) used to stick, at least for a little while. Then it would revert to “Recommended” when the app would update, so I would just fix it again for my older relatives when I was visiting with them, and walk others through fixing it on the phone.

With the latest app update on AppleTV, you can change the view within any given shared library to Library view, but as soon as you exit that library the setting reverts again. So returning to that library only a couple seconds later means you’re back at the Recommended view again. It will not stick, and it’s driving me crazy. I’ve already gotten a call from my mother about it, and I’m sure I’ll be getting more from others. Mom wanted to watch “Hidden Figures,” but because it was added to my server a long time ago and because it wasn’t listed on the Home Screen or the Recommended view within the library, she couldn’t play it.

I don’t know if the same thing happened with the Roku client, but if it did, I’m sure to get calls from others.

Can somebody tell me if there’s a setting I missed somewhere that will allow this to work properly? At an absolute minimum, the view should not change just because somebody looked briefly at a different library and then returned to the previous one – that’s a basic human interface issue.

Even better would be for whatever view the user selects to be persistent, even after leaving the app and returning, or after app updates. This should not be difficult to implement.

Please help…

I haven’t seen the AppleTV app, but I presume it is like all the others. If you go into Settings > Experience, there should be a setting called “Remember selected tab.” If this option is on, the app will return to the tab you were on when you last exited any library. This is remembered across sessions, and the setting is not (normally) reset by an update.

Thank you for your reply, beckfield.

I’m sure I went through all the settings on the apps when this interface issue first surfaced (when they first implemented the “Recommended” tab). I didn’t find a setting like that then, either because I missed it or maybe because it didn’t exist then. But I did find the workaround, which was that I could change to that tab in a shared library, and the setting would stick for a while.

This latest behavior is different, but maybe the issue is due to that setting you described. I will check it when I stop at mom’s house later.

Thanks –
