Library with media files on second drive (proper file structure) show up as empty

I have a second drive on my Linux Mint server. Plex installed without issue. Media files directory is structured properly. Adding a library via the selection process shows the drive, but no subfolders under it. I add the subfolder–Media/Movies in this case–but the library still shows as empty. “Scan Libraries” does not seem to do anything.

I assigned user plex to my usergroup and set the permissions to the Media folder appropriately. Still nothing. What am I missing? I had the same issue several years ago on another attempt
of a Linux install. (Previous Windows install had no issues–but I want to move away from Windows)

You’ll find a lot of Linux Tips to help along the way.

Searching will be of help because we’ve all been there at some point.

Thanks for your rapid reply, and sorry for my late response. The morning after you replied I attempted the solution prior to my remote training session at work, only to find the server had crashed in the night. I was able to get it rebuilt last evening after work, and then worked on Plex tonight.
The article linked in your response was very helpful as I am now able to link to my media files from Plex. However, my issues have migrated to inconsistent access to the server, and getting it to actually scan the library. I’m currently searching for a solution. Thanks again.

If you had to reinstall the OS then you’ll most likely need to repeat the procedure because

  1. The system will be back in its default state.
  2. /etc/fstab will have been overwritten by the re-install
  3. Previously used directories won’t exist after reinstallation

Actually all is well now. The issue I just had was due to my having reset my password, and the server was not able to be seen. I had to log out and then back in.

The OS issue happened during the night prior to my having even tried the solution in the link you gave. So once the server itself was back up, (reinstalled Mint without formatting) I then tried your link. I used /plexdisk rather than what the example used so as to be even more clear as to what that mount was for.

I’m just recently getting back into Linux, so I’m a bit rusty and things have indeed changed somewhat.

Thanks for the help.
