Limit Libraries Managed Users Have Access to?

So I created some managed users for my family and when I go to choose which libraries to give access to, I only get the option to share “All” which contains four libraries.

This seems like a bug but I’m not sure. How can I specifically choose the libraries the users have access to? Ideally, I’d just want them to have access to Live TV and any recordings they initiate.

EDIT: Boy am I a noob at this and @TeknoJunky I figured that part out while I was editing. I do believe what threw me for the loop was I did not have that option during user creation. Anyway is there anyway to restrict access to just Live TV?

try unchecking ALL

for live TV I haven’t tested it, but you could enable live tv (restriction section) and disable all other libraries.

if you want them to access recordings, then they need access to the libraries with the dvr recordings.

if you create designated DVR-Movies and DVR-TV libraries, then enable only those libraries, they should have access to live TV (again restrictions section) and the 2 dvr libraries.

Thanks,

Is there a way to choose a library when making a recording? So I assuming I need to set up libraries for each user and then I can give each user access to their library. When they go to record will Plex figure out where the content goes?

you should not need to create separate libraries for each user, unless you absolutely want to prevent any user from seeing any other user recordings.

when the recording is created (or edited), there is a setting to where you want it stored, simply choose the applicable library/path.

obviously the library must already exist (you can’t create a new library from the recording config).

I actually DO just want users to only see their own recordings. I’ll also just set up a shared library…now how do I actually switch to the managed user? I saw the Support Article but I’m not seeing the option on the android mobile client. I did see it in the web browser interface on my computer so I know it’s set up correctly. Hopefully the process to access the managed user is the same on Android and Roku.

Fyi, once i login it goes straight to the admin user. When I click on my icon I only get settings but no option to switch.

EDIT: Android is working now. Don’t know what happened. I just decided to check again and i saw the drop down arrow. Hopefully Roku is the same.

Ok not sure I understand what preventing other users from seeing other peoples recorded shows, its not like there is much to stop them from watching any other OTA show outside of plex, but whatever floats your boat.

on any client there should be some kind of menu or dropdown that will let you select a different user.

in the settings you can choose to ‘automatically sign in’, by unchecking that the user will need to be chosen every time the plex client is started.

2 other things you should be aware of;

  • for your admin user you should specify a PIN, this is the only way to to keep other users out of the admin user.
  • any managed user WITHOUT a pin, can be selected by any other user (ie plex does not know who is who, so joe can log into jenny’s profile and vice versa).
  • so if you want to keep ‘kids’ out of ‘adult’ profile, you must setup applicable pin numbers for each account you want restricted.

Managed users cannot set up their recordings if that is what you mean. Only the admin account has the ability to create recordings. So when you create the recording, you can specify which library it gets saved to. Then you gave each user access to that library only. Although if more than 1 user needs access to a specific show, sharing by libraries will get complicated. An alternative is to use labels. You save all the recording into 1 library (1 for movies, 1 for shows), then after at least 1 episode is in there, you can add a label to the show’s data.

For example, you records a show that Bart wants, so you create the recording, then when it’s available, you label it “Bart”. You label Lisa’s shows with “Lisa”. If they both want access to the same show, you add both labels for that show. New shows won’t show up until you add the label so you always have control what they can access.

After getting home yesterday I was able to see managed users being implemented on the Roku side. I’m a bit shocked that managed users cannot set up recordings. It almost seems that the feature should have been implied when introducing managed users.
