Linux media server subtitles format

Server Version#: 1.103.1.238-223cbba6
Player Version#: Roku - latest

I upgraded my server last night and listened to a live TV version of FBI. I was not pleased to see that the new subtitles were now CC1 with large fonts and black background with no way to adjust them. I checked other programs, all the same. I had older recorded versions of the same program, like a week older and they were really ok, smaller font, transparent backgrounds.

Once again, somebody somewhere made a change with no options to adjust whatever to reverse the change if you didn’t like it. I am getting a bit frustrated with upgrades that are implemented like this latest one.

Can someone please fix the subtitles once and for all instead of just throwing stuff in the air?

The sever does not create subtitles.

If you use the subtitle search, which gets them from Open Subtitles, that only gets SRT subtitles.

If you have some other subtitle format then those are embedded in your video files.

What do you mean by subtitle search? I have never seen a search for subtitles anywhere. Can you explain?

I just select the subtitles available in the player. What a coincidence that the subtitles change with a new version of the server.

it’s a little different depending on client but on Roku in the subtitle selection option there is an option called “More” which allows you to search for one by entering the name of the movie ( it defaults with the name of the file)

on Roku Playback Settings>Streams>Subtitles and the More option is on the bottom.

CC subtitles are sometimes weird and don’t always show up as an option because they are part of video stream

in your account audio settings you can choose if you want it to search for SDH subtitles or not. ( SDH is for hearing impaired where it has subtitles for things like a phone ringing)

Thank you for that. I can say I learned something today. I looked into the Roku a bit more and I found that Roku has sent out an update and that the accessibility settings were over-written with new settings. I was able to set them the way I had them before. I just forgot that I set them a few years ago.

However, in looking into it a bit more I discovered that if I went into Live TV in the Plex app I noticed that it did not pass subtitle from my HDHomerun unit. The HDHomerun app displays captions as it should. The HDHomerun unit passes captions to the Plex App but the Plex/LiveTV does not display them.

The Plex/DVR records captions and I can get captions when I watch a program in recording mode (time delayed playback). So, it seems that the Plex app may have an issue in the Live TV feature.

On the Roku support site, they mention that some vendors like to control their own captions vs using Roku settings to manage their captions. It would certainly simplify things if Plex used Roku’s settings for managing captions. It would be a lot less confusing from the user’s perspective. I know when I use Plex app for playback, I have to navigate the app’s menus to get to captions while most other apps on the Roku use the star key to manage captions.
