Linux server setup problems

Server Version#:1.21.1.3830-6c22540d5.x86_64
Player Version#: 1.92.1.140-8e1f68f5
OS: Linux Fedora Budgie Atomic

I am trying to set up plexmediaserver on linux, which I am not familiar with at all. I installed, started, and enabled it but it will not connect on http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html#!/ on my web browser (Firefox). I did get it to work once, but now it won’t at all.

I would greatly appreciate any help so I can get back up and running.

First , and most important question – Are you familiar and confident with Linux?

If you do not have a mastery of Linux, this is an uphill battle.
We are here to help with Plex on Linux but not equipped to teach Linux.

Starting point for tips & tricks you’ll need is here.

Thank you for your quick reply ChuckPa.

I am not familiar or confident with Linux at all. I have been a Windows user since the beginning, and DOS before that. I had set up Fedora on a second drive to slowly migrate away from windows, as I learn Linux. However, I recently had a power failure during a forced windows update, and now I cannot get windows to run at all, even from a restore point or a reinstallation. I was planning a gradual transition to Linux, but it seems that I am now committed to make an immediate transition. Fortunately, the Linux terminal has a somewhat familiar feel due to my DOS experience.

I really just need someone to point me in the right direction. I will check the Linux tips you recommended, I think that may be exactly what I need.

Thank you!

When you have a complete failure of Windows, because of what it writes to the HDD in hidden partitions, you need to WIPE the drive (delete all partitions and zero the first part of the drive) and install on (what looks like) a new HDD.

Only then will it start over, from scratch, as you want.

On your linux box, verify that plex is running with

systemctl status plexmediaserver

You want to see that it is enabled and running.

What error do you see when you try and connect??

Hi napolij, thank you for responding!

I enable and start plexmediaserver, then check the status, which shows enabled and activating. When I check the status again it says failed. It seems it is having trouble starting it for some reason.

The message I see is, “Unable to connect. Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at 127.0.0.1:32400.”

That smells like a local firewall issue on your server

I will check that! Thank you!

I finally have Plex running on Fedora 40! It took alot of reading over the last few days, but I was able to learn enough to troubleshoot and get it running. In the end, it was all related to permissions!

Thank you ChuckPa and napolij for your responses.

Congratulations!
