Thinking of building a new machine (budget) to run PMS, and strongly leaning towards using Linux as I’m sick of the bloat of Windows. But from what reading I’ve done over the past hour, it seems like ripping BluRays in Linux either was or currently is difficult/not possible. So I wanted to double-check that with the linux community out there - will ripping blurays be possible w/ a linux machine, and are the specific drives I should look for/avoid?
No personal experience… from what I’ve seen, the regular apps for legal ripping use cases are available on Linux as well.
Example: http://www.makemkv.com/download/ — they even have a whole forum post describing options to install it incl. automatic updating or alternative built options.
Definitely use MakeMKV. If you need a smaller file afterwards, you can put the resulting file though Handbrake or your other favorite transcoding program.
I don’t know of any issues with picking specific drives. I’ve used two different SATA drives and an external USB drive without issues. The exception to this is if you want to rip 4k disks. There you may need to be careful to get specific models and certain firmware revisions as the manufactures are intent to make ripping difficult there but this is not a Linux issue at all.
Thanks guys for the quick input. I had seen posts such as this and this which, although old, made me wonder if a linux platform was going to be an uphill battle to get my BluRays into Plex. But I see that’s not the case with you. Looking forward to shedding the Windows shackles!
Your links talk about playing the BD disk on Linux but what you really want to do to bring them into Plex is to rip them. Ripping is an easier task than playback especially since it doesn’t require having to process the menus, controls, and the like.
MakeMKV works the same on Windows/MacOS/Linux so if you want to see what the process is like before switching, grab the Windows version and give it a shot. The only difference in the Linux version is you have to compile a part of it instead of being given a binary to download but the compile step is really just a “run these three commands and wait for it to finish” kind of thing.
