Hello, I searched for how to sort all movies into genre, but all answers I have seen is just how to put a filter onto the search function. So you have to select Action movies and then it marks/shows all movies with Action genre. I hope there is a way to create a LIST as well as you have your librarys to the left, not to compare to the actual “play list”. If you could create folders based on a filter (rules), så Plex automatic adds new uploaded movies to the correct folder. Not moving the movie to a folder named Action on the harddive, but simply adding it to a genre folder in Plex.
For example I have all my movies in one folder on my harddrive and it could be perfect that Plex could point out all movies with a specific or multiply genres into virtuel folders, so you just clicks on a genre in the left menu. In that way a movie is able to being showed in more than one folder (movie genre). Just like netflix!
If not, I think a lot of users want this and maybe it can be made? Please ask for further understanding.
Btw. I’m using Plex Server on Openmediavault on my NAS if thats important.
If I may ask… what in particular don’t you like about the current filtering?
As you pointed out, that’s how Plex currently allows to structure the library and access only subsets of data (incl. similar access mechanisms in most clients or custom filters for more complex filtering — e.g. only showing British Comedy…)
I don’t want to add comedy to a filter everytime I want to find all comedy, and remove it again for searching for another. I want to tell Plex to put all Comedys in ONE virtuel folder and then you can just click on Comedy, or Action/Thriller a second after that if thats what I want.
So basicly set up rules for automatic sorting. If the movies is Action/Thriller then Plex will add the movie in a virtuel folder called Action/Thriller. See image below.
Probably something to be verified on the clients you’re using. I believe on Apple TV you might actually already be able to do that… however not for all.
That’s where smart playlists are helpful! When you’ve filtered/sorted the library as you like it and then click „create playlist“, Plex will create a smart/dynamic playlist that is updated (e.g. if there’s new movies matching your filter)
Works with custom filters as well
No, I told you already what I want, but apparently it cannot be made. So it’s not what I really want, more what I can live with. Writing over a forum makes it a lot harder to explain my self, sorry if I’m not clear.
The function of the playlist yes, and with the grid view, but the playlists is only for one user, so shared users have to make them as well. And the problem that I cannot see the playlists from my PS4 Plex app.
But again, if we can manage to get the grid view and the playlist appear on PS4, it will be fine for now.
I believe see what you’re wanting, and I like the idea, but, if I’m correct, it is not currently supported in Plex.
Tell me if I’m wrong, but it seems like either of these would meet your requirements:
Genre based Library.
Take current library capability, and add ability restrict view to designated genre (action, sci-fi, drama, etc). This could be shared among all users, just like any current library. And Grid View.
or
“Global Playlist”
Let the admin (or any user, I suppose), define a Playlist based on genre (or possibly other criteria). This Playlist, dynamically updated as media added/removed, can be shared amongst all users on the server. And Grid View, because List View blows chunks .
