List of supported av codecs on ExoPlayer for Android TV

First of all, I am new to Plex, but I’m already getting the hang of it now.

I have the Plex TV app on a Mi Box S and the Plex server installed on an old and weak Ubuntu PC, but I thought this wouldn’t be an issue because both are on the same LAN and so mostly no transcoding is required.

However, I noticed while playing one of my movies that the quality is very low although the original file is 10+ GBs, so the original AV quality is top notch.

When checking the stats on my Plex TV app player (the internal one, which I think is called ExoPlayer) I found that the reason for the poor transcoding is that the audio codec is not supported by the internal player.

After doing a bit of research I didn’t like the idea of using an external player and even if I did I couldn’t find the option for it on my Plex TV app.

So I opted for conversion, and man did it work like a charm! I liked it and liked the idea of pre-transcoding some of my incompatible movies to TV quality setting.

The only problem is (aside -of course- from the extremely slow conversion rate on my old PC) is that I don’t know which AV codecs are supported by the current latest ExoPlayer.

If I had such a list, I would scour my media library for any movies not conforming to this list and add it as a conversion task.

So can anybody help me with that? I mean finding the supported AV codes for the internal player for Plex TV for Android TV devices?

The app will support most any codec. However, it polls your device’s capabilities and will then allow using what is reported as being supported. Using 1080p H264 video and stereo AAC audio is almost guaranteed to be supported by anything, but if you want anything fancy like surround sound or 4K video, that will depend on your devices and there may not be a common format that all of them will like.
