What media formats does Plex support and not support? (Android, Android TV and IOS)

The support article on the official website does not list in detail, all the video and audio media formats supported by plex for Android, Android TV and IOS. Can someone tell me in full?

I’m not sure there’s such a conclusive list. There’s a lot of dependencies beyond the device types you’ve named… including the specific models / OS versions as well as the combination of different formats (e.g. some devices won’t be able to direct play certain formats in the presence of an image based subtitle or subtitles in general).

Do you have a specific use case you’re aiming for?

For example dts-hd, I confirmed that my android tv device supports dts-hd, but the plex shows that it doesn’t support it and needs to be transcoded for playback. Then I tried to play it on my Android phone and the plex shows that it is supported and can be played directly. So I’m very confused, why does my Android tv show that dts is not supported?

Some TVs support formats but don’t expose them to other apps. Sometimes it can be due to the combination of formats (e.g. DTS-HD only being supported with specific video formats or if there’s no image-based subtitles…)

It’s so strange that I have absolutely no way to determine what the problem is…

Some devices are pickier than others. And just because the Android device supports it, doesn’t mean another device like the TV or Soundbar or whatever is getting the signal off that will. Plus the android device may say it supports it but does not.

I know my Sonos soundbar supports 5.1 audio but from Plex all it outputs is 2.0, unless it is Atmos or AC3. That’s on Sonos, even though my Shield Pro supports nearly every format fine, the sound bar struggles at knowing what to do if it gets anything else (and my prior soundbar was better with codec support and didn’t have that issue). So I have to have Plex transcode the audio of the files that are in AAC or Opus of FLAC or whatever to AC3, then it outputs 5.1. And while part of the blame is on Plex, as Emby and Kodi etc work properly, I also know part of the blame is on Sonos, because their hardware is weird and has limited codec support, plus Atmos works without transcoding, so ultimately I just think narrowing it down isn’t a single point of error.

My advice is to assume Plex is able to output everything and the issues are going to be with your hardware.
