Plex Player Matrix/Wiki?

Is there a Wiki or some other source where I can view what players are capable of playing what codecs or formats?

While there always may be device constraints I’m trying to create a “Recommended” list of devices for my family to purchase that can avoid all transcoding. While I haven’t decided on a format yet I’m looking to convert my whole library into HEVC or other newer formats. If the device has a “Plex” app I know I can check the “HEVC Level” but if it’s a Chromecast or other device how do you determine compatibility?

Also is there any way to determine what audio codecs a device supports without playing test files?

I’m not aware of a single conclusive source.
There’s a number of obstacles for such a list, such as

  • different models / flavors of the underlying hardware and their playback capabilities – ranging from model iterations (e.g. Apple TV 4 vs. Apple TV 4K) to platforms supported by different vendors (e.g. Android TV on Sony vs. Nvidia Shield)
  • different firmware/OS releases per platform with significant changes to their capabilities
  • players supporting certain codecs but not in all combinations

Since Plex QA should have a list like that for testing would they consider releasing a streamed down version as a table with some level of caveats?
