Live playlists/live channels

As a hardcore user with 1000s of movies, I would like the option to have my own live TV channels. For this I would create a playlist where hand-picked films are played continuously. I might give them titles like “Classics” or “Jay’s favourites” etc., just like a “normal” playlist with pre-defined content.

Because, I am not always in the mood to search my entire collection to suit my mood and rather appreciate the live offering of something currently in motion. So, when I come home tired from work, I want to simply put Plex Home Theater on and surf between my movie or series channels instead of scrolling up/down slowly loading A-Z lists.

Other times I would like to be able to zap through my channels and perhaps spot a movie I have not considered watching before.

When I have a group of friends over for a movie night, as many other Plex users might confirm, the sheer amount of time that is spent on deciding which film to watch is pretty lame. Good to have some live content suggestions to zap through. I then also want the possibility to share these live playlists with my friends so they can continue watching on their own devices.

There could also be an option to specify playback timeframes/limits for a bigger playlist. I could say for example to loop 100 movies in one playlist with each a 30sec limit (defined starting and finishing point) and therefore create my own trailer-like channel.

The whole concept may be applied to my music too, thinking of having my own radio stations based on playlists with live continuous play - fully sharable of course.

This is not an attempt to go back to the dark ages of television broadcasting, rather an attempt to make more customised and cool stuff with one’s growing content library. Running my own on-demand service does not cut it for me anymore, I want the DJ back in da house :-)

Thus functionality basically already exists. You could create a playlist by adding your desired items to a particular ‘collection’ (can be tedious I know) and shuffle the collection with the recently added play que feature

This sounds a lot like the suggestion to eventually port PseudoTV from XBMC.  If you search on it, I think you will find it has the features you seek, though it would require some changes in Plex to get it to happen.

Id like to see something along the lines of what you guys want in the future.

A live channel would be a natural fit for plex in taking over all of my media consumption time.

Here is something that I've really wanted that goes in conjunction with the ultimate channel....

A dynamicly generated bumper feature.

         - A time/date/weather display bumper.

         - Ability to adjust how frequently to display.

         - Use your own background music, or silent.

         - Adjustable bumper duration.

         - A pictures folder can be used as background images.

In terms of simply a live channel setup here are a few things I'd like to see.

          - Multiple "live" channels... Comedy, Movies, Music... Managed like the sections are now.

          - Resume playback memory for each channel.

          - Ability to request a file be played next on a selcted channel from a connected Plex Remote client.

          - A Simplified command set during ultimate tv mode. (I've been tempted to build a plex kbd remote for my setup.)

                            - UP (Volume Up)

                            - Down (Volume Down)

                            - Left (Previous Channel)

                            - Right (Next Channel)

                            - Esc (Exit)

                            - < (Previous Video)

                            - > (Next Video)

                            - Space (Play/Pause)

I'm sure there are a million more ways to improve the live channel concept.

I do really hope that this is considered by team plex.  It would be a real leap forward.

What do you guys think you would like to see?

Literally the only feature we need in order to take it in to our own hands and program something:

Playlist support.

A channel, plugin, or even independent app, could do all the magic behind the scenes to generate a 'live tv' playlist, then the client would simply ask for the playlist.

Please add your 'like this' to any other threads that cover similar topics. I think we're close.

bump so this gets more votes in the new forum interface
