Live TV and Time Shifting

+1 for Time Shifting (live TV and playback while still recording).

My use case is simple, yet very: Start recording of sporting event (add 30-60 to scheduled time for possible overtime), go do something productive, then come back and start watching the game from the beginning, fast forward through all the pauses in action, and finish the game about the same time as live broadcast.

I can’t wait until this is implemented, Nvidia shields on each tv streaming live tv with time shifting and dvr built into the plex interface == better than tivo or anything else

I would second Ron’s comments! I would love to have Live TV as an option and be the number one feature request. Additionally, I would like the ability to prune out ads when recording is finished.

Thanks Plex!

@nayra

You can already prune ads if you use MCEBuddy.

Create a new library called Recorded TV. Set all new shows to download to this library. Set MCEBuddy to watch this folder and convert the files.

Duh…thanks, i was not thinking, tested it out and it works great. Now as soon as i can manage via xbox app and there is a grid guide and live tv i will be good to go.

You wont see a grid or graph style guide. Thank Rovi for that!

Like many others I seem to be looking for a modern, maintained and supported version of Windows Media Centre. My media centre extender boxes are feeling a bit old and clunky now but they have massive Wife Approval Factor. Everything in one place, from one remote control.

I’ve bought the Plex Pass and the HD Homerun twin tuner box and the DVR part is OK. Does not match the WMC functionality yet though, but I’m hoping it’ll get there - main issue is no grid type EPG which you can scroll through/ navigate about in.

I bought both of these things hoping (kind of expecting) live TV/ timeshift to be along soon. I really hope it will be as the rest of the plex functionality has the potential to gain full family and WAF.

My questions:

  1. Is Live TV/ timeshift actively being developed and if so when is a beta release expected?
  2. Will DVR functionality become part of the iOS and Android apps?

Thanks,

Calum

Also live video capture from non-TV sources, and live audio input.
Thanks.

Grid Program guide and LIVE TV, is all I need to make the complete cord cut and Plex Pass me for lifetime!

HDGrandSlam will stream live TV, time-shift, leverage multiple tuner devices, show what’s on, and show you your already preconfigured (from my.hdhomerun.com) favorites…all without any configuration.

This is by far the best Plex Channel for interfacing with the HD Homerun hardware. I’m using it with 4 HDHR boxes to stream live TV to my 4 Roku TVs, 2 Apple TV’s, and multiple Android clients all from within Plex. It assumes a 4 hour duration to make the transcoder happy (so every 4 hours the live broadcast ends and you have to hit play again if you’re watching continuously for over 4 hours). The Guide could be a little “prettier” but the functionality is there. I watch love MLB, NFL, and NBA games this way and the Plex transcoder has no trouble keeping up.

Perhaps this functionality will find it’s way into the mainstream Plex functionality instead of as a channel one day…

Those are the features that made me replace Plex with Emby.

I second live TV and pause and play/rewind features. I could finally stop renting DVRs!!!

Live Tv feature would be so nice. Also the use of SatIP Devices.

New cordcutter here and Plex subscription for about a week now. So far so good! Plex app and interface is top notch!

Question would plex allow me to start recording a show (hdhomerun extend) and then stop a recording somewhere along the way to create one file. Then start recording it again essentially creating a second file for that show. Then I can watch the first half while the second half is recording? Does that work? Can you stop a recording and then start it up again?

Or can the HDGrandSlam plugin work along side the DVR feature? Can I use the plugin to watch live TV but still have scheduled recordings as long as they don’t conflict?

Thanks

I’d say you’re playing with fire trying to stop a recording to watch the first half and then recording it again. You’d likely lose the first half if the second half finishes and overwrites the first half…it’ll see the show as the same season/episode. Also, that’s if you even got it to work. I’d bet it would have issues trying to start up the recording again (just a hunch).

As far as watching a show alongside the DVR using the HDGrandSlam, it shouldn’t be an issue so long as you have available tuners for the HDGrandSlam to use.

I agree with everyone else here…this DVR Beta has been going on long enough and its kind of sad that we don’t have native Live TV and some sort of time shifting capability available by now…

Thanks! I’ll take what I can get anyway. So far I’m depending on the not so legal newsgroup download solution using sonarr to get the shows my family watches so this will be my solution for those that I can pull in via antenna or need to watch live via the HDGrandSlam plugin.

Ditto, we really need live tv functionality in addition to a pseudo live tv functionality or one similar to have the live ota video channels and custom built channels sourced from local media and have Plex smart enough to create them based on popularity and networks.

Also, it would be great to give transcode options for DVR shows to transcode to either x264 or x265 hevc. It would save space for recorded shows to use hevc and reduce bandwidth when streaming outside home network. Useful for devicess with hevc hardware transcoding and decoding like Nvidia shield tv.

+1 we really need live TV support.

+1 for Live TV on Windows. I wonder when…?
