Live TV & DVR: Fixes and Improvements

That’s on Apple TV 4 (not 4k)

I just tried it on a Fire TV 4k (pendant) and it just gives “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restarting both the Plex Media Server and this app” in any channel. TBH I get this quite a lot on FireTV Plex whereas AppleTV plays same files fine.

Tried it on an iPhone and that seems to work without messages popping up.

TV watching really needs to be click and play, to be accepted into the living room. It’s loads better than when I last tried it. Keep up the good work!

I’m also getting the “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please try restarting both the Plex Media Server and this app” on my mobile android app - it normally works on there - but hasn’t the last couple of days. I’m running all the latest software (beta for both server and mobile).

@beeman and @damonc_nz let’s make a different thread for the Android player issue there  Some logs from Android would be great

You can customise the iOS app in the same way you can tvOS (see: https://support.plex.tv/articles/customizing-the-mobile-apps-2/). I’ll try and repro that issue with tvOS. Can you confirm what version you’re on?

Apple TV Plex = v2.16 (14822)
I presume this is latest as apps are set to auto-update

2.17 is out now, so give that a shot, if you can

OK, Auto update of apps was on, but it hadn’t updated! found Plex in App Store which then showed update option. I can clarify that the same Start/Live message pops up on v2.17 (15246)

I also just tested it on an a JVC Fire Edition TV (TV with Fire Stick built in) and it worked properly on that. I will have to look into this more tomorrow. It looks interesting. Truth be told though, I never actually watch Live TV, but I do like making tech things work, then move on.

I’ve sent you logs in a message

Has there been any updates on tune speed? There was a solid back and forth a few weeks ago showing that the issue is on the Plex side but it would be helpful if we could at least get an acknowledgement so that it may be improved in the future. I would still love to pay Plex and make it the only media solution needed but tune speed has to at least match competitors to do that.

I tried it a bit more today and it looks great, but it was still not stable enough for family use. The EPG was wrong more often than it was right, often showing data for a completely different channel! + got the white circle of death a lot while watching stuff + channel changes way too slow! NextPVR can do them in about half a second. I’ll try it again in 6 months, when hopefully a lot more stuff has been fixed. No point in logs at this stage as you just need to use it to see the many issues, they’re not hard to recreate. Looks promising though.

@DaveBinM, any update on this? It’s also happening on my Android TV as well, so live TV is completely broken.

I may have figured this out. I recently changed my ISP router, the new one has DNS rebind protection. I had tested most things out after the change and everything seemed to be working fine (getting secure connections to my server). But it seems that it might have been the dns rebind that was impacting just live tv - I’ve put in an exception for my plex.direct address and live tv seems to be back.

Is this expected? I would have thought that it should just fall back to non-secure (I have the security set to Preferred).

Will my SSL cert change very often? If it does then I’ll need to come up with a better workaround (most likely using a different DNS server).

We have a fix for that coming in 8.1.0 of our Android client

You know what I’d like? A way to hide every single show with genre/category set to other & infomercial

Hi! I was just trying to record some things, and I was wondering if the UI could be updated a little bit to show when something is recording? When I hit the record button, I’d like it to turn red or give me some sort of indication that it’s recording?

Thanks again, everything has been working great.

Do we know when basic functionality like time shifting, stable and responsive channel tuning and an accurate guide will be available on the ROKU clients?

Xbox One App still basically nonfunctional with Live TV. the guide and seeing what it playing, now is fixed and useful - but the video still stalls after 5-15 mins and just sits buffering.

Many posts have been made in the Xbox One area forums, but maybe this is a better place to flag the issue.

currently I am messing with quality settings/disabling direct play/stream options, trying to force it to convert/transcode or something different. so far no change in the issue.

In the UK, several stations broadcast classic shows in 4:3, with commercials in 16:9. Whenever there is an aspect ratio change, the stream stops indefinitely. Stopping and restarting sorts it, but having to do it a couple of times every 20 minutes or so is a little jarring.

This is with the web client and Chromecast (haven’t got the player to work on Android yet). Is this a known issue? Am I doing something wrong? A little new to Live TV.

I’m running server 1.19.3.2843 on Unraid with a HDHomeRun Quatro as a tuner.

我是来自中国的用户,因为语言不通,找了好久没有找到8.1.0的版本下载,能否给一个下载链接,谢谢
