Live TV & DVR: Fixes and Improvements

Now LIVE TV is really BROKE!!! With the last update (8.0.0.17115-beta) when i try to go to settings to turn off the new player, because it is still BROKE, the app throws me out. COMMON PLEX get it together.

This sounds like a Trump Tweet.

Will do! Thanks!

Not 100% sure but I believe you can change this in your clients advanced settings ‘refresh rate switching’

Just a thought: Are we sure its not changes in the audio (sync) causing these problems?
I have been having problems with No audio at all, audio running out as well as certain UKHD channels crashing and yet at another time of day it is absolutely fine? Just tried to remux one of these problematic files (DVR recording) in MCE buddy and it refused to do it because of an audio problem??

Of course i have this turned on in nVidia Shield’s Plex advanced menu. But after playing with it for few days, Live TV does NOT make use of dynamic refresh rate switching.

Movies, TV shows etc all switch refresh rate as expected but not live TV.

So if you have your nVidia Shield set to default 59.9 or 60Hz refresh rate in System settings in Europe, you’re going experience really ugly stutter in Live TV.
The only remedy i found was to set Shield’s System Settings refresh rate to 50Hz. I hope Plex can fix this.

apologies perhaps I didn’t read your post fully.

When you say stutter, does it get so bad it pixelates and eventually stops and plex freezes?

I have been trialling another ap and this definitely switches to 50hz but I get identical problems as in plex live tv.

no, not pixelated or distorted but clearly motion is not as smooth. Very similar to 3:2 pulldown effect. This is clearly a bug in Plex client on nVidia shield because i can see in the logs, that the server correctly analyzes the stream being 50fps but client is mistakenly reporting that my refresh rate IS ALREADY in 50hz - which it is not.

If i play stored 50fps content (drone fooage video) right after, it switches to 50hz just fine.

Reference forum post for work around for new player not working on Nvidia Shield.

I wouldn’t call it a workaround, but a fix on user’s side

Give it any name you want but it is something that needs to be fixed by Plex

Ha. This is not something that needs to be fixed by Plex or even can be fixed by Plex.

How is it the end user problem that Plex cannot code their product to work correctly with generally accepted standards? End users should not have to customize their environments with exceptions to rules that are set to protect them.

Thanks Coxeroni for pointing out this article. The issue I have with this whole situation is that I know of multiple posts to Plex along with the sending of logs to Plex involving this particular issue, LIve TV not playing when using New Player, and I know Plex has received logs, including from me, of the issue and never once pointed out this article/solution. I still stand behind my statement that Plex needs to fix this issue in their code. I am not aware of any other commercially available products that has a similar requirement. IMHO this is a huge burden to place on users of this product that consist of all levels of tech knowledge while, on the other hand, it should be something that is quickly/easily spotted by Plex support.,

Plex requires some computer knowledge. If you don’t have that, there is Netflix.
If I understood it correctly, the dns rebinding of your IP to a domain is needed for secure connections, since no secure connection can be made to an IP, but it has to be a hostname.
Emby works differently because it leaves everything to you. You connect directly to your own server, but you also have to supply your own certificates if you want to share remotely in a secure way (using a hostname).
Plex does this all for you, but requires the dns rebinding to work.

Which way do you think is better?

You may claim to support more tuners but when tuning is unreliable and slow and the DVR and playback have been broken since release, how is that a positive? I mean basic time shifting on a ROKU platform has never worked but you claim to support ROKU. Sorry, but let’s ground our comparisons here. I’m using an 8th gen i7 with 16b memory and Hauppauge Quad PCI tuner, a Gb switched network with one switch between client and server and a 2019 ROKU Ultra and the experience is terrible. Pick ANY combination of server and client versions you want and it just doesn’t work.

Thanks though for the free trial to find this all out.

I try the TV part of Plex once or twice a year out of curiosity to see how it’s progressing. Tried latest version today and every time you select a channel from the guide it pops up a message “A recording for this channel started 1 minute ago. What would you like to do?” with options “Watch From Start” + “Watch Live”. Is this intentional, having messages you have to click on every time you change channel?

I tried a few programs that played OK (after a few button presses every time!) but the EPG (UK) was for totally different programs to what was actually on.

Which client is that with? If a recording has started less than 2 minutes ago, it shouldn’t show you that prompt at all
