Sure i understand the timeout that is why it would be nice to be user selectable/configurable. as for the button there is bunches of room now on the menu since the nice redo. Anyway thanks for considering the requests and maybe they will happen…
Thanks for the feedback, regardless of whether we implement the suggestions or not, feedback, comments, and suggestions are always welcome!
Does “Android” platform include Fire TV 4k? Tuning is still 4-5x slower in Plex than in Channels so it is not a hardware issue so I’m hoping its a missing software piece still.
I would love to switch to Plex but it can’t take 10+ seconds to change channels.
*Edit- looks like the audio sync issues are still there as well. Watching for a few minutes the audio eventually minutes ahead of video. Its a shame as the Plex interface would be incredible with working Live TV/DVR but just doesn’t work. The Channels app has this working flawlessly so it is 100% on the Plex software side breaking things.
Appreciate that you’re still trying to improve the basic Live TV and DVR functionality. However, I’m still hoping that you could address the status of the following to points:
- Support for unencrypted tv signal over satellite (DVB-S)
- Support for EPG data from multiple regions/countries at the same time (say German tv over DVB-C and English Freesat channels over DVB-S)
Any progress on those features?
A non-destructive commercial detection would be welcome. And, especially for the UK, ordering by HD channels for iOS/tv and android/tv app, just like you can in the web app.
Fixed
Looking forward to all of the new improvements. Just wish Amazon was a bit quicker releasing new updates.
One of the features I hope to see at some point is previous channel option.
Hi team !
I am looking for a fast way of finding a specific channel in the provided EPG list.
As it is now, the only way I can fine-tune my “Channel to EPG” mapping is to go manually through the whole list due to the format being : [Channel number : Channel name].
As a result, typing the first letters of the channels does not work.
Having the channel name first would solve the problem.
Another solution would be to have the ability to see the actual list, but in the form of a text file, or any other format which allows for fast channel searching.
Do you think any of these solutions would be doable ?
I would love to have my EPG update itself automatically, as it is one of the last problems I have left.
Had a play with Live TV last night (Android TV on Sony). Was really impressed with the tuning speed, now that it’s noticeably faster it actually makes it usable. I would say it is tuning generally at about 5-6 seconds, which doesn’t sound amazing, but considering the normal TV takes 3-4 seconds to change channel it’s not too bad.
Well that is unfortunate. I hadn’t tried Live TV in a long time but with the news of the improves I thought I would give it a try again. I thought something wasn’t working right as my Shield TV(Plex server) was still taking 6 seconds to tune a channel from my HDHomeRun. It sounds like this is the norm. @DaveBinM is their a technical reason for this when the HDHomeRun and Live Channels app tune a channel instantly?
I love the update overall but 6 seconds to tune a channel still seems a bit too long for daily use.
If you want to fix Plex TV & DVR you should take a look at Channels DVR it works incredibly well.
Channels change almost instantly no 12-20 seconds delay.
Scheduled recordings work and the options available far surpass Plex.
Thought I’d test this on my other Sony TV this morning and it was taking 20+ seconds to change channel, not good! My Plex server CPU was about 5%. I stopped and started the Plex service and it came back down to 5-6 seconds, with the odd 9 second one thrown in.
I also tested with the HDHomerun app (on the TV) - it takes about 4-5 seconds on average to change (picture comes up after about 3 seconds, but the sound and picture don’t start working until 4-5 seconds).
So Plex still seems a bit hit and miss - but it’s improving.
@damonc_nz, @Munns86, @SimonCraddock It’s likely we’ll won’t be able to match the speed of Channels as they go straight from device to tuner. We go device, server, tuner, which is what allows us to use the tuner from anywhere and transcode it. However, it should be at least comparable to tuning on a real TV. Anecdotally, it takes me about 4-6 seconds to tune a channel on my TV. Exactly how long it will take will depend on your tuning device, server, client, and network.
I can’t see all the drama, works for me in Oz and nothing that I would call terrible response times. Hate to say it, the Keyboard heroes are in force at present, which makes we wonder about the intent. If this has offended, sorry but a bit of compassion in the world would be a lovely improvement in these trying times.
With all the companion players available, this discussion is often mute. Use your phone or tablet and all things wonderful will happen.
I hope these troubling times will end soon all things nice will return.

Always nice to see a fellow
and thanks for the kind words, there’s a lot going in the world at the moment
Then Plex Live TV & DVR isn’t worth me using, it’s slow and lumbering, and unreliable.
No one said it goes to plex.tv. It goes
YOUR tuning device
YOUR Plex Server
YOUR client (playback device)
Channels DVR doesn’t have the concept of a server, so it’s
YOUR tuning device
YOUR playback device
Channels doesn’t offer the same kind of remote playback and transcoding that we do. They’re not comparable in that regard, and only works with HD HomeRun devices. We work with many more.
Channels DVR does use a Server backend
Only for recordings, you can use it without a server. That’s not possible for Plex, and their tunes go directly from the app to the device, not via the server.
Even using Channels remotely is quicker than Plex, so it must use the Server. On Plex locally 12-20 secs to load a channel over a gigabit LAN. Remotely Plex is of similar speed.
Channels DVR remotely on 4G 6 secs to load a channel.
