Live TV/DVR/Sling TV Set up

Hi everyone,

I currently have Plex running my movies and use Netflix and Amazon for streaming services. I want to get into the world of recording live TV (from antenna) and now that Sling TV will be carrying the NFL Red Zone channel, I want Sling TV for the football season and some other channels.

I currently have an Intel NUC with a NAS hooked up for storage. I’m trying to simplify things for the wife and kids. The Nvidia Shield looks cool and now that it supports Plex is this a better option? What would be the easiest set up for sake of user interface or possibly one stop shop or two stop shop for the family to use?

Jay

Oh I need to add that I ultimately need a device like the Shield or Roku because we are building out our theater room with a projector so we will need a source for Netflix/Plex/etc…

Sorry didn’t know how to edit until now…I read that people really like Tablo as well. I don’t mind having multiple devices on the back end, just wanted as little as possible on the front end for the user so they didn’t need to go to 5 different places to watch different things.

I am in the same boat. I want one device on the front end to load my DVR, Sling TV, Netflix, Hulu, etc. Going to test RaspPlex and see how that works. The biggest drawback I have read about so far is that if you want the Live TV and DVR functionality you are pretty much stuck with Tablo. Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong on that. I really wanted to use a RPi2 with OpenELEC as a DVR on the back end, but can’t figure out how I would add the channel to Plex.

Here is what I ended up with. I have OpenNAS with tvheadend and plex. I also have an HD-Homerun box which is linked to TVheadend. I am using a Raspie2 with Kodi on it as my STB. It’s a bit involved getting the TVHeadend working, but once you do it’s golden. I can DVR, pause, FF, Rew all live TV. The guide is far superior on Kodi than Plex. Plex with TVHeadend sucks big time. I use plex mainly for my recorded movies, pics and music. Haven’t found much else it is good for. I think there is an add-on for Netflix on Kodi as well. I have a smart TV so I just use that for netflix and hulu. Thinking of getting another pie and dumping Plex altogether. Pretty much useless once you configure a NAS with TVHeadend and Kodi.

perhaps Plex will consider adding Live TV channel viewing for HDHomerun.
there is an addon for plex (called Grandslam) that will allow plex to view live TV… not sure how well intergrated it is… still waiting for my HDHomerun prime.

We have apple tvs at each tv in the house. I have 3 hdhomerun connects for a total of 6 tuners available to watch live TV and record. We use the Channels app for Live TV and may try their DVR as well. You can also use Plex DVR if you want. Apple TVs have all the apps you need except Amazon. For Amazon we pull up the show on an iPhone or Tablet and use airplay. Works fine and the wife is happy.
