Quick question. Does Live TV use the Plex server to transcode? I assume so but the reason I ask is to make sure all future clients can get Live TV eventually. For example, HDHomeRun doesn’t work on Roku because Roku doesn’t support MPEG1. Just making sure Live TV doesn’t use the client to show the raw tv feed.
yes, when I stream to my ipad live tv is transcoded on the server.
This may be the biggest issue with plex. In my experience it’s impossible to know if it decides to transcode or not - regardless of wether the client supports the original format.
This makes it impossible to have good experience with various clients if you do not have CPU power enough to do realtime transcoding. I wish they would add a control on the clients so we could override autodecisions and manully select transcode or not, and at which quality.
But more importantly… we need stable and wellimplemented support for hardware transcoding so we do not need several heavy CPU cores on the media server.
