Live TV without transcoding, is it possible ?

Hello,

I’m actually using a TVHeadend server and kodi on the client side. I’m using a TBS dual tuner card that works fine on linux, and there is no problem with TVHeadend and Kodi.

I have then heard that PLEX has now this available too with the Plex Pass. So I wanted to give it a try. The tuner was detected (but not officially supported, not a problem).
The recording transcoding was desactivated, but as long as I know, I didn’t found a way to desactivate it for Live TV Streaming.
And that seems to be my problem ! My CPU is not capable of transcoding the stream fast enough. 90% of the time, the video is buffering or frozen… In the server tasks list, I can see the plextranscoder taking 100% of the CPU power.

I tried to change some parameters in the Plex server settings (transcoder settings, quality video, direct stream and direct play activated…)

But nothing worked…

TvHeadEnd Doesn’t need to transcode (passthrough mode), and Kodi receive the stream (video, audio streams, subtitles…) without any problems. It should be possible for Plex as well.

Any ideas ?

(I momentarily stopped my Plex Pass renewal, because Live TV is the main usage of my media center, but I may restart it if I resolve it)

Thank you for your help.

Did that answer your question?

Surprised that this is not answered. I am getting 1080i streams that are encoded to 1080p. They are MPEG2 (according to dashboard). In Roku there is a “play mpeg2” setting, but on web player I cannot find the equivalent, and the transcoder is kicking in leading to 50% CPU on a single stream.
