I am newbie to all this including Plex. Just learned about all this stuff few days ago and started Plex Saturday afternoon so I am very newbie.. forgive me if I am asking something that may seem illegal or anything like that.. but I just had to ask because it is better to ask and know the answer before doing anything..
I am wondering if there is any app that may work with Plex to watch some live TV streaming such as local channels (CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX)?? I am willing to pay reasonable price for subscription but free would be awesome! hehe I am NFL Football fan and really can't live without it.. so if there is a way I could watch NFL games using app on Plex, that would be super!
And where do I find info on how I can add such an app? Also, in which category is good to discuss about this topic in depth? I was not sure which category this would be best fit so I posted it in here as General Chat.
Plex dos not replace your TV channels. The program is there to manage the media you recorded on your computer. There are Channels but they are just streaming videos (except for Twitch maybe which is used to stream live recordings of games) like Youtube and other stuff like that. This is not live TV at all. As a matter of fact, Plex is mainly used on a TV as another channel to stream your own videos.

There are many free and legal internet TV channels, including news, music and sports channels. There is nothing wrong with asking.

As a matter of fact, there is--but it will not be easy. For a local broadcast channel you could get a USB TV tuner, connect it to the server, and then use a Plex plug-in to view the stream instead of running antenna wire to all of your TV sets. It would be nice to see official support for that in a future version of Plex. If your local channel has a free internet stream on their web site, you might be able to watch it in Plex using the IPTV plug-in, but dont expect the station to give you the actual stream link, the configuration is not user friendly, and it may not work with all Plex client devices because Plex does not officially support live streams yet. There is a service for the X-box which automates this, but development of the corresponding plug-in for Plex has stalled.

Depends what you mean by "this topic." This is not a good place to trade sports channel links, but there is a place to obtain tech support for plug-ins. However, Plex does not officially support live streams, so it is not easy or automatic to make them work. If the developers will not support live internet streams, someone else will soon make a similar product which does, and then Plex will disappear. Many cable-TV providers around the world are now selling subscription TV packages to their local customers which can be received on an internet TV without a cable box. (There is a Plex plug-in for that too!) They cant hold back progress, and IPTV is the future of television. At some point your personal media library and live TV channels will all be integrated into the same user interface, and that interface will be part of your TV.
Live tv is a pain, until they officially support it there won’t be much you can do, but it’s among the highest requested services out there.
As for nfl, there is an nfl channel, it requires you to be able to subscribe to gamepass, but if you do happen to live in a country that can do that you can watch live nfl games through that channel on a variety of devices.
That's too bad. I miss it when you could select certain channels you know you frequent and they add up the cost then send you the bill to pay for it. It was very cheaper than paying for cable subscription. The fallback is that system was too expensive.. north of $3,000.. then came echostar(now DishTv) and then Directv. I remember hacking the box to get everything for free and end up not paying anything.. Was good for many years until lightning strike and burned the receiver.. swapped out to new receiver and it automatically burned the box then it was no more!
I've got ATV1 but I haven't gone forward with hacking it yet.. think it's too old to do much anyway..
I am a newbie, too, but I managed to set up the system using HDHomeRun to get the channels, then using Plex software to actually activate them. You can assign any of the channels Plex finds to any channel, but each individual channel has to be set up so that the number # points to channel #.
