Due to the recent problems with SAMSUNG TVs, plex.tv-Logins, etc. I wonder, if there could be a real offline (without internet) mode.
I only use Plex on Samsung, Windows, iPhone and iPad at home and do not have any sharing with friends. So I really do not need a Login on plex.tv every time. O.k., if available, this could synchronize or something else, but I do not Need it.
And yesterday with Samsung and today with plex.tv and the recent Forum hack, it Shows, that one time perhaps the Plex Server shuts down, no one is able to use their Servers and apps in the local Environment.
So I would like to have a Kind of twostep-usage, first local (and every time available) and only if plex.tv is available, then additionally login, check, synchronize, …
Or is this available and only a matter of my settings?
local network direct connection does work but i believe features only available for Plex Pass users would need plex.tv authentication and validation of Plex Pass subscription.
If you do not need Plex Pass subscription features then you can currently use the Plex for Samsung app directly (Manual Connection) connecting to the Plex Media Server DHCP Reserved / Static IP Address
i don’t think so. if plex.tv is down, e.g. Today more than one time, I was not able to Login to the normal webinterface with Lokal ip via Browser. So I think, currently, there is always a First Check to plex.tv. Same yesterday evening.
Yes, the web-app works locally. But not all apps will work when the internet goes down, specifically any app that is plex-pass only (like the iOS app I believe). This is quite frustrating, but par for the course with ‘DRM’.

You need to be precise. I am told that any app that would not work - it would be a bug as apps should cache credentials and cache PlexPASS indication. So what app is it? Plex for iOS is not one.
+1 I wasted hours last night trying to get this working when Plex.TV was down. In the end the only thing I could get working was a manual connection on Plexbmc (Kodi) would have preferred an official client worked in this circumstance.
I also find this frustrating. One large reason I use plex is so I can use it when my internet goes down. Well my android devices and Plex app do not seem to work with my chromecast when plex.tv is offline.
Mind you, my chromecast requires an internet connection to work regardless… but I could always go back to my amazon fire tv stick. But that thing sucks. I don’t think the plex app has even been updated and there are so many bugs (playback stopping unexpectedly, no audio on certain media formats, etc.)
I’ve “liked” the original post in this thread but I’ll just put this here to be clear:
I’d love very much to be able to use Plex within my household when I don’t have access to an internet connection. Our connection is fairly unstable here and when it goes down is when we’d like to be able to use our local media library on our internal WiFi network the most.

Hi all,
I see a number of posts on this but no real resolution. Thanks to hurricane season I am without internet and not expected to have it back until next week earliest. This will be more than two weeks. We are cord cutters so this is problematic.
But, no worries, I tell my wife, we’ve been using Plex for years and have a large library of media to revisit. Should provide ample distraction until the internet is working again and Netflix, Hulu, Amazon are all back …
Well. Imagine my surprise. Plex insists on internet access to stream media from a computer on my local network to another device also on my local network.
Thanks, Plex. This is horrible and going to make it that much harder to introduce new and cool technology to the household in the future.
Is this crippled functionality supposed to be a feature?

There is now enhanced security which means that whilst the server is signed in to plex.tv then all plex client apps need to also sign in to plex.tv for authentication unless the IP Address of the machine / device running the app is whitelisted in the server network settings.
https Secure Connections also need internet DNS lookups for plex.direct urls.
To work offline, you can sign the server off in settings / server / general which would also remove the secure connections and for client apps ensure setting to fallback to insecure connections is set to always. Discovery of the server on the local network would be through GDM or via IP Address and local port 32400

I suppose it is possible for PMS to save Plexpass validation for a short period of time when an outage is in play…
But it would have to be limited to the actual Plex Pass Interval of the account involved.
Monthly would work for 30 Days and need to re-establish connection monthly to reset the timer.
Lifetime would not time out or need yearly connection.
Without the timeout it would be possible to steal Plexpass by signing up for a monthly then edit hosts to deny access (or block via Firewall) and then canceling the subscription.
It is a shame that you lose Plex Pass features whenever your internet goes down or Plex.tv gets knocked down due to network attacks like the one we had this week. I don’t know if Plex.tv was affected by it but I know the forums were down for a time due to it.

Hi - you are commenting on a July 2015 post I made. A lot has changed since then with regards to dependence on the internet and my last post here links to the support page where the dependencies are outlined
Is there any update on this? This is very frustrating.
I have Internet in “pay for days” mode in my beach-house. Several times I go and back in the same day to this house in wich I have a Plex server and a Android TV Player.
I only can watch my media files when I pay 1 day of Internet? I must pay one day of Internet for see my personal videos or photos? I don’t understand this. Today I used Kodi for watching my files!!!
I don’t pay PlexPass for lifetime for use Kodi !!! X ( X (

In a holiday home with restricted internet availability, I would do the following
Ensure Plex Home and Managed Users and Pins are not in use and there is no Plex Home setup
Ensure Secure Connections Disabled (Settings/ Server / Network)
Sign the server out (in settings / server / general) - that would disestablish secure connections anyway
Check plex client apps to see if there is a setting for use of secure / insecure connections. Ensure Allow Fallback to Insecure Connections is set to Always or on Same network as server
Do not use plex client apps that are downloaded from the internet on launch
Comcast cut a cable bundle and we were without Internet for about 6 hours. During that time it was impossible to do anything on Plex. At all. I could only get as far as the user selection screen. I have an on-LAN synology serving Plex, but I couldn’t get to any of the content. I had to manually mount the Synology folders and play videos with VLC.
Needless to say, I find this not just annoying, but unacceptable and inexcusable. Lack of Internet should never block my local content.
When Plex cannot connect to the Internet, it has to fall back gracefully and non-destructively to a LAN mode.
I’d like a single checkbox that will stop any and all data collection from my server - for any account that is accessing it. If that means I can no longer use plex.tv and all my users need to hardcode my server, and I need to reissue my own certificates - so be it.
I’m even OK with paying for it on top of my plex pass.
