Local trailers for tv shows missing on Apple TV and iOS

For movies type libraries, I have the “trailer” button visible and it’s working well regardless of the client (web, iOS, apple tv)

But when it comes to TV type libraries, only web is working.

Here is how trailers are organized inside the file system :

According to Plex docs, for TV Shows trailers with local files, only the “show” level is working

It seems consistent with the behaviour I have on the web :

Here is the same screen on my Apple TV, no trailer button available though :

Any idea how to fix this?

Which agent are you using for this tv show library? Did you refresh the show’s metadata after adding the files?

Side note: don’t mix the inline and subfolder naming schemas. If you place the trailers in a subfolder, there’s no need to add the -trailer suffix.

I’m using the Plex Series agent.

And yes, I refreshed the show’s metadata.

Is the trailer option on your Apple TV by any chance listed in the show’s context menu (...) or are the trailers listed below the season (as other local/online extras should)?

For movies, I have a button next to the Play button (same as the UI on web from my previous screenshot) that play the Trailer 1, other trailers are available in the Extra section below.

For tv shows, I don’t have the play button but I just noticed now that all the trailers are in the Extra section. So Plex recognize the trailers for a TV Show, just the “Play trailer” button is missing.

Would still like to fix this issue if you or anyone else have an idea @tom80H

AFAIK it is a design decision to omit the dedicated Trailer button for TV shows. Trailers for these are relatively rare anyway.

The mobile apps don’t have the dedicated button either, not even for movies. But they all have the context menu “Play Trailer” (if there is a trailer available), and the trailer(s) is appearing among the Extras below as well.

You mean trailers for TV shows are relatively rare? How so?

For the mobile app, there is a “Watch Trailer” button (behind the “More” 3 dots menu) for both movies and TV.

It would be a design decision to not have this button consistently across all platforms but when it’s available on the web and on iOS but not on Apple TV, this isn’t a valid justification in my opinion.

It just is. Simple experience.

That’s what I meant with “context menu.”

I don’t think it is available on iOS. At least not in the modern app.

I’m adding trailers from YouTube to my tv shows so that people using my server are able to watch a trailer to know if they want to start the show or not. So trailers aren’t rare in my case.

For iOS, the button is available through the 3 dots menu, so I consider the design consistent with the web, it’s just that the UX is different on mobile than on web and Apple TV.

This is movie but it’s also available for TV Shows if you follow the right naming convention for the file.

But on Apple TV, regardless of the UX, this feature is just not available at all.

I just did a comparison on the various apps (mobile vs. Apple TV; Apple TV public vs. preview).
What you currently see on the mobile app is also present in the Apple TV preview version:
Items no longer seem to have a trailer icon/button on their main page. Instead trailers are accessible via the item’s context menu (both for movies and shows — also for seasons and episodes).

In the new experience apps (mobile and Apple TV preview), you’ll also find all available trailers in the item’s extras hub (not just onwards from the 2nd)

Cool! Is the preview Apple TV app available on TestFlight or something? How stable is it?
Also, do we know for when they plan to release that officially?

The preview is on TestFlight, but it’s been full for some time (still worth a shot).

No ETA on when it’ll be released to the public.

He’s speaking about his own local trailers on TV show level. How do you know that these trailers are “rare”? Maybe his sources are different from yours (YT?) - or the trailers are home-made (I have many of these)?

For me, this is a different use case than any “rare TV show trailer” delivery of Plex.

Maybe the design decision can be re-discussed with this use case in mind?

Of course, the listing futher down helps, but I cannot see the reason why this is different from the movie experience.

Edit: Just saw @tom80H s comment on the Apple Preflight version. So, obviously, the internal discussion had already led to the IMHO correct consequences. Thx.
