Lossless Video/Audio?

Is it possible to get lossless or near lossless audio/video from ripping a blu-ray into a format that is supported by the PS4? Even if it is a paid program…and the size of the files is large…I want to see if it is possible. I want to rip blu ray movies into as perfect of a movie file as possible that will still play on the PS4 (Plex app) flawlessly from my QNAP NAS without it having to transcode. Is this possible?

Anyone? Hoping for some advice in this area…

it doesn’t say but if there are any type of subtitles it will need to be transcoded

Yes I figured it would need to be embedded in some way. Just looking for advice on the software to do this…

No, you probably won’t be able to make 1:1 equivalents of your bluray to watch via direct play from your NAS. Although you can still make very good quality files that will play nicely from your NAS.

Have you tried to encode an MP4 using Handbrake’s Devices \ Universal or Regular \ Normal setting? It’s absolutely is not BluRay quality but you might be happen with it. Avoid(!!) selecting Regular \ High as is sets encoding parameters that the PS4 cannot direct play.

You can probably play with the Video tab’s Quality setting. I’d try first the CR default. Then experiment with setting the Average Bitrate to a value between 8000 and 10000.

In the Audio tab make sure that the first audio track is your desired dialog track. The PS3 can direct play 5.1ch AC3 audio stream as long the Audio \ Dolby Digital (AC3) setting is checked in the Plex PS4 app Setting menu below your user avatar.

Currently the PS4 app does not support direct play videos with subtitles. This may or may not be a big deal based on your viewing needs.
