I have just finished updating the firmware on my QNAP NAS as well as the plex version to the most recent one (9.12.12 I believe). I have burned a large collection of blu-rays to MKV using MakeMKV. Then used Handbrake to reencode them as MP4 in as close to original format as possible. This was all working at one point and the Plex media server app on my PS4 would simply play anything…even if it was the wrong format for PS4, it would just transcode and be jittery. NOW, I am having issues where the movies I burn and even some that I download, just don’t play at all. I can play them on my local PC, and even on the Web App for Plex on my PC. But on the PS4, they just sit there loading and never actually start. This applied to a large portion of my movies. I haven’t changed anything and this is very frustrating. This is my primary means of movie entertainment and I feel like it is more broken than ever. What in the world happened?!
Did some more poking around last night. I was able to get a movie to play that had dual audio. I turned off AC3 on the PlexApp, and also put my PS4 to Dolby audio, instead of Linear PCM. None of those worked. I was only able to get it working by switching the movie audio to Stereo, instead of the AC3. Why is this happening? I know Playstation is not a friendly environment for 3rd party developers, but I am just trying to use the most basic of functionality. What is going on with this thing?!
Can no one explain what is going on here? I am actually very surprised that no one else is having an issue similar to this one.
Anyone? Would love to get this fixed. Or at least point me to the appropriate forum or channel I can use that would know what is going on…? I am completely confused on what happened.
I’m uncertain what’s happening too. It all sounds very confusing to me as well.
So you upgraded your NAS and Plex version for your NAS and things started going bad, is that correct?
It could be switching the audio around switches our playback approach between direct play and direct stream (or transcode). Did you re-encode the MKV to MP4 manually because the NAS isn’t fast enough to direct stream?
Is your Settings \ Video \ Local Quality set to a bitrate higher than the bitrate of the video you’re trying to watch? If the quality is lower than the movie’s bitrate the video transcode. If the quality is higher the video will direct stream. Funky I know, I’ve made it easier in our pending release.
Try attaching the XML Media Information for one of the MP4 videos which isn’t playing.
I am trying to include the xml file I saved off from the instructions and it is saying “file.xml is not allowed.” Not very informative error. From your other questions though, yes I have various files. Some I downloaded straight as MP4. Some I burned from Blu Ray to MKV and then used Handbrake to generate MP4 from them. They all play 100% fine on the web server…so I can access Plex on my browser and they all play. I go over to the PS4, and unless the AC3 setting is OFF and the audio is on Stereo (or some random combination of the two), I either can’t play the video at all or there is no audio. It is all very confusing to me.
Has anyone looked into this yet?
