When transcoding ASS subtitles a lot of errors are logged into the console (roughly one per millisecond) causing the transcoding speed to drop below normal playback speed.
The error is as follows:
[0x7f33cb7fe700] Error — [Transcoder] [Parsed_inlineass_2 @ 0x2d70a80] [0x1ee5090]: Warning: no style named ‘nd15’ found
I’ve uploaded the plex log file here:
Example video (using the first english ASS subtitle):
Server Version#: Version 1.20.2.3402 (Linux - Debian)
Player Version#: Version 4.34.4 (Plex Web) and also on Android TV App
I’ve extracted both subtitle streams from the file, “good-subs.ass” do work (but are way simpler when viewing the subtitles) and “non-working-subs.ass” give the problems as described in the Plex log. The subtitles can be found here:
A fast scan of the .ass subtitle file shows lines like:
So my first guess is that Plex is interpreting the \r in the line as a carriage return character and searches for “nd15” instead of rnd15. It’s just a guess though, I’m not proficient in subtitle formats or the internals of Plex.
I’m not an expert on subtitles, but from what I see “\r” means to cancel the style listed after the r, so in this case cancel “nd15”, but there is no style named nd15, so that error appears correct to me.
I opened up that subtitle file in the program that created it, and that even shows those lines as errors.
I don’t know about ^^. But, to me, it looks like whoever created that subtitle may have copy/pasted some code from another project that doesn’t work for this specific subtitle.
