Loudness normalization produces a crunched compressed sound on Plexamp

I have seen this brought up a few times, and every time I see the same reply of “just enjoy the music”, but those same people will demand only blu ray remuxs when it comes to their shows and TV.

There is something going on with the parameters with plex’s loudness normalization audio chain. The issue immediately goes away after turning off loudness normalization.

I don’t have this issue when running Roon, or my Navidrome instance where I used replay gain 2.0 on all my songs and albums. I’ve also sound leveled both sources so there is no loudness bias and there is an audible difference.

This be had this issue since 2021, but it’s bothered me more now that I have other home servers software to compare to.

I love Plexamp so much and just desperately want it to be the best it can be, but there is an issue with its audio normalization that is not present in other players. Be it local, subsonic, or roon.

I love this service so much, but I don’t really watch tv shows, or movies and only jam music and play along as a musician.

Thanks for everything you’ve built out so far.

Here’s some additional info:

  • this is from iOS, although the issue seems to persist on all devices.
  • The EQ option is off
  • Limiter being off or on does not effect the issue
  • Audio files are all in CD quality FLAC, or higher
  • I do typically use transcoding to 256kb/s Opus, but the issue persists even with direct play.
  • Running latest public release builds on all of my devices and server

Troubleshooting steps I’ve done:

  • Uninstall and reinstall Plex
  • Factory reset OS
  • Rebooted Server
  • Reinstalled server Plex
  • Test different audio outputs
  • Leveled DB output when comparing to other music servers in my system to verify issue

Please let me know if I can provide more info. I would be ecstatic to help, because Plexamp means so much to me.

If you can reproduce with a specific track, kill and restart the app, play that track and then upload Plexamp logs and we can see what gain was applied.
