I purchased the M2 Mac mini base model after hearing about how strong it was with transcoding. I figured for the power draw it’s the best way to never worry about “too many users” being an issue (At least for the next year or so).
That said, I have been unable to transcode anything on this bad boy. Whether I’m local or remote I can stream direct play easily, but manually setting it to transcode has not worked once. I’ve tried all of the following:
Toggling HDR
Toggling Hardware Acceleration
Toggling Hardware-Accelerated Video Encoding
Changing the Transcode directory to /tmp/ or leaving the field blank
Restarting Plex
Toggling Subtitles
And any combination of these things.
I’m at the end of my rope here and hoping someone can figure out what would be causing this? Did I buy the M2 too soon? It was just so tempting at $499! Plex Media Server Logs_2023-02-03_22-36-45.zip (2.2 MB)
I’m trying everything in my library. While one of them may have been a Dolby Vision, I added the Trash-Guides filter to make sure they all had an HDR fallback, but even still other files that aren’t DV won’t transcode properly.
Oddly enough, it was actually working to transcode last night. I’m wondering if something I’m running in Docker is causing it to fail? PMS itself is being run natively, not in Docker.
I haven’t had any issues with playing, transcoding, or converting media from 4k / HEVC to 1080p on multiple local and remote clients.
With that being said, I have zero DV media on my server, and I’ve had at least 6-7 streams/transcodes going and while the CPU usage was high, the sessions kept playing fine. I’ll be trying to stress it a little more with multiple client types and local/remote to see how many I can get before I start to see buffering.
