Apparently it only happens if Plex is in full screen when connecting to the Apple TV, if setting up mirroring when Plex is in Window mode it works, and then you can go full screen.
But if Plex is in full screen mode when connecting it always crashes…
Just wondering… why would you do that instead of using the native Plex client on the Apple TV?
I know, it was just a video file that was too heavy for the Apple TV apparently - more power in my MacBook Pro to decode it and instead of re-encode it I just run it on the Mac and mirror the screen onto the Apple TV…
Does it “crash” immediately, or does it take some time? If so, how much time. I can test this with an M2 MacBook Air and a first generation Apple TV 4K.
Hard to tell, but it appears to crash immediately - the screen goes black as soon as I’m connected to the Apple TV (4K (ATV, not video), in my case) and it re-sizes the screen to adapt to my TV.
I’m stuck in the black screen until I stop the mirroring, then I see the error report from the Plex crash.
It must have something to do with the change in resolution when switching between laptop screen and TV resolution. Now it crashed when I stopped the mirroring, even though it wasn’t playing anything…
I just tested here with:
Plex for Mac: 1.110.0.351
Plex Media Server: 1.43.0.10162
macOS (Plex Media Server host): 26.0.1
Apple TV 4K (1st gen): 26.0.1
I didn’t experience a crash during several minutes of playback. Nor did it crash when stopping mirroring (after switching back from full screen).
Ok, how much of a resolution change is it when you mirror?
From the native M2 MacMini 2560x1664 resolution to 1920x1080 of my Apple TV 4K-connected TV. So, a significant reduction in resolution (1920x1080 is roughly 49% the resolution of 2560x1664, in pixel count).
