This is for the Plex app.
Player Version#: Both 1.40 and 1.50
Playing a 4K HEVC 10-bit file results in tons of stuttering/dropped frames when hardware acceleration is enabled. Disabling hardware acceleration makes the video play at normal speed. Can this be fixed? I’d rather not have to keep Plex in software-only mode.
I’m having the same issue running on a 15inch 2017 MBP with Catalina. I’m currently running Plex client: Version 1.4.1.940-574c2fa7. I’m not transcoding and my 4K HEVC 10b files are playing via direct play for both video and audio codecs.
Responding with “it’s probably your hardware” is rather glib when both the OP and my processor can certainly handle decoding HEVC HDR content. I can play these files with VLC and hardware decoding with no issues.
I had the same issues, HEVC was stutterings insanely, was almost like i watched it in 5-10 fps.
I think i found out something, the PMP app you download from plex.tv’s website is not the real PMP somehow.
When i downloaded the correct release that you can find in the forums is like the old PMP player that you in fact installs, which you dont do with the other one.
After installing it my stuttering disappeared for all my HEVC materials.
Scroll down to the latest announcement and download the mac release, and see if its any better.
Plex, please fix this issue. I have an Macbook 16" 2020 and an iMac and on both I am having this issue. Simply unchecking hardware acceleration fixes the problem.
If an issue is so easy to reproduce, a solution should not be that difficult
What the heck Plex? This thread was opened in Dec and you are continuing to ignore this issue. No comments, no support. I can understand it taking time to resolve issues but ignoring your customer base is NEVER excusable. Horrible customer service.
I’m having the same issue here. Mac 10.15.6 with a Radeon Vii GPU. Acceleration works fine in every other app. In the Plex for Mac app the interface and playback are very choppy and unwatchable. Browser playback works fine.
