Mac OS 13.00 Plex Server Not Working

Server Version#: [Latest]
Player Version#: [Latest]

I just installed MacOS 13.00 (Ventura) on my Mac that runs Plex Server, and Plex Server no longer works. The can’t connect to server in browser, and it ultimately says “Not authorized - you do not have access to this server.”.

This is after installing the very latest Plex Server version. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Let’s hope the not authorized can be solved by you reclaiming the server, but I suggest you prepare for the worst. Because this is is a highly technical problem, you might want to let us know

  • your skill level with this sort of thing
  • what backups you have
  • whether you reference the plex articles or tried anything they said

Hopefully!

  • My skill level is fairly high, used to terminal commands etc
  • Time machine backups
  • Haven’t found anything, yet

That’s good news. What I would do:

  • Move my good server aside.
  • install a test server with 2 films and prove you can watch one & admin the server.
  • break the claimed state on purpose
  • practice reclaiming it again to prove reclaiming works
  • Remove test server, replace good server, reclaim good server.

While most systems that run PMS use a Preferences.xml, on a Mac we use a plist.
Your server is linked to you and only you (claimed) via:
(I) entries in the plist,
(II) entries at plex.tv via Settings → Authorized Devices → Servers

Changes to your plist should be made while PMS is not running. You can read it anytime.

defaults read com.plexapp.plexmediaserver

It’s acting like it doesn’t recognize you as the claimee if that’s a word.

How to break the claiming state and reclaim:

  1. Reset things to Default like nobody has claimed it, which retains media & metadata, by doing the following steps:
    • Remove the server name from Authorized Devices to remove it on the Plex.tv side.
    • Remove the four entries in your plist to remove it on the server side.
    • Sign out of the plex.tv website in Safari.
  2. Claim the server
    • You’re on the cutting edge with Ventura. Claiming could work in Safari
    • It might fail causing you to try the command line
    • It may never work. Why? because you didn’t tell us the exact version of PMS and there have been hotfixes, betas, and previews.

Some details:
This Plex article explains the four plist entries you nuke in (1). Don’t follow the other parts.
This Plex article lists the three directories you move aside if you choose to experiment on a test server and not your good one. In addition to the three directories, you move your plist aside.
~/Library/Preferences/com.plexapp.plexmediaserver.plist
More detailed steps of (2) above to Reclaim a server in Safari:

  • clear all-time history and cookies,
  • reboot the Mac,
  • start Safari and switch incognito mode.
  • Start PMS
  • in Safari go to the URL → http://127.0.0.1:32400/web

@shadesofgraywpg Did this get resolved for you? Did you identify what caused the issue?

I’m trying to figure out if I can upgrade to Ventura as well. Thanks!
