Unauthorized Server Issues

Hey. I’m having troubles with my Plex account. My main server is running from an iMac. While I can get my Apple TV on as an authorized device, my main server shows up on the device as “Unauthorized” even though the server is also an authorized device. I can access all of my files from my smart TV in another room of the house, but can’t access them from the Apple TV. Also, I can’t seem to access the files from the online web server since I attempted to log out and back in to resolve this issue. How do I fix all this?

Update:

Things aren’t looking good for my relationship with Plex at the moment. I deleted my servers and signed out of everything. I restarted the server device and tried a fresh start. Now I can’t get anything to work. I can download and open the Plex server, but it won’t connect with my web account. It identifies that there is a server to be claimed, but then tells me I don’t have access to that server. Not sure what to do…

From your description of the behavior, it sounds like you (accidentally) actually have more than one Plex account and not everything is signed in to the same account. When that’s the case, when a client/player app is not signed in to the same account as the Plex Media Server, it can result in being “unauthorized” to access the server. The easiest thing to do would be to get yourself into a clean state and then sign back in to everything with the same Plex account:

  1. Sign out of your account in the Apple TV app
  2. Sign out of your account in the web app(s), via the top-right user menu (make sure to do so both for https://app.plex.tv/desktop and http://localhost:32400/web on the server machine)
  3. Make sure you’re signed out on the main https://www.plex.tv/ website
  4. Go through the steps in this support article to clear the account information from your Plex Media Server (stop when you get to the “Restore Access to Your Plex Media Server” section)

Now you should be in a clean state, so you can sign back in correctly:

  1. Open your http://localhost:32400/web local web app and sign in to your desired Plex account (presumably the Conrad F account)
  2. Go to Settings > Server > General
  3. There, you can sign in/claim the server, using the current Plex account
  4. Open the https://app.plex.tv/desktop hosted web app and sign in to the same Plex account (it should see and have access to the server)
  5. Sign in to the same Plex account in your Apple TV app (which should then similarly be able to connect to the server)

So I’ve followed these steps three times, just to make sure I wasn’t missing something. As soon as I try to claim the server, I get notified there is “no soup for you”. I’ve tried deleting the server, reloading the server, updating the server… I’m just not sure what’s going wrong. Any other suggestions?

Please open this web app now: app.plex.tv

Thanks. Just went there and it still saying it can’t find a server.

“A server could not be found. Download and install Plex Media Server, and it will appear here.”

I’ve downloaded and installed the server, and it’s currently running, but I can’t seem to claim it and the web app won’t recognize it.

Have you tried to install Plex on another computer?

No. We only have the one computer.

It was working at the beginning. Then I tried to add another device. I signed out to do this and haven’t been able to sign back in with an active server since.

This I don’t understand. There is no need to sign out if you simply want to add another device. Unless you are juggling with several plex.tv accounts, which is not recommended.

Can you try the steps from this article again https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/
and stop before ‘Restore Access to Your Plex Media Server’

Then download this bash script and execute it in a terminal window:

Thanks for the reply. I had signed out because I was unable to access my server on my Apple TV. It was telling me the server was “unauthorized”. So I signed out of everything and attempted to sign back in, but I’ve not been able to access my server since.

Also, I ran the directions you gave, and it came up with this:

Comparing entered passwords

Comparing entered passwords ok

Getting PMS Server Identifier

Getting PMS Server Identifier ok

Getting User Token from plex.tv

Getting User Token from plex.tv ok

Getting PMS Claim Token

Getting PMS Claim Token ok

Claiming server

Fatal error happened

HTTP returned Status 401

@dane22 do you know what could be wrong with the script?

Nothing…PMS is already claimed

See https://github.com/ukdtom/ClaimIt/wiki/How-To---Linux,-Mac

So, if the server is already claimed,
either you did not stop the procedure before 'Restore Access to Your Plex Media Server’
or
you performed it on the wrong computer.

I only have one computer. That computer is my server. And I stopped before restoring access. My last action was opening the Plex app on my computer. I didn’t launch or sign into my web app.

Can you try to downgrade the server software by one version?
Older software versions should be in Plex data folder/Updates

And adding to @OttoKerner here:

When doing the steps he provided before, did you verify the entries in the plist file actually was gone?

If I log into my web app to claim it, it will show that this server is available to be claimed. But if I go to claim it, it will tell me that I don’t have access to that server. I did this a few times a few days ago. If it is somehow claimed, do I just deleted it out of the “Authorized Devices” to unclaimed it?

This is only one part. The other part is the https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/
But yes, you can try that. But only both together.

I did not verify they were removed. The first first file kept saying “could not be found”. I’ll find the directory and locate the files to confirm removal. I’ll try the process again.

To downgrade the server software, do I need to delete the software on my computer and download an older version?
