I have been using my MacBook Air as the Plex Server and I store the media on an external SSD NVME m.2 drive which is plugged into the MacBook. It is working well and I can watch on my TV and MacBook and iPad etc…
Would I be able to store to store the media instead directly on my network (say attached to a switch or the router) using a NAS or some kind of External storage. The point is that the media will still be available if the MacBook is not on the network.
To do what you asks, you need to install PMS for and on your NAS as well as having your media there. Then everything will be run from the nas and you’ll be able to disconnect your MacBook and take it with you and just connect to your Plex Library from your NAS everywhere, assuming you let the NAS up all the time.
Of course, you can store your media not only on the DAS (your current external SSD), but also on a NAS. The MacBook Air Plex Server would be able to reach it while on the network and provide it to your clients as you are used to.
As your MacBook is the Plex Media Server this would not be possible this way. You can only use Plex on clients when the Server is present. With your MacBook out of the network, it is not.
To achieve this you’d need to move the Plex Media Server to the NAS itself. Doing this all Clients on the network as well as outside (with remote access) would be able to use it.
Thank you both. It was just really easy for me to install Plex server on my Mac. This will be my first time having any form of home network back up which is not cloud based (iCloud/Dropbox etc)
Once I buy/build a NAS, is the PMS easy to install? The reason I ask is that I assume that if I buy a Synology, I will have to do the set up process via some kind of Synology web based interface. Does Plex.com allow me to find a NAS on my network and install the PMS there? Is that how it works?
Thank you. Plex covers all the major NAS brands so its good. But what happens if I build a NAS myself? I expect that I would need to load an operating system into it like Windows so I can use a Window Plex Server.
