MacBook as a Plex Server setup advice

Hello,

It was suggested to me to use a PC/laptop to run PMS and using my existing NAS for the media storage. I have PMS installed as a Package in Synology DSM 7. I have installed PMS on a MacBook, which I want to use.

During the set-up process for PMS on the MacBook, I can’t work out how to connect it to the folders and files on the NAS. When trying to Add Folder, all I see is a list of locations that I don’t recognise, headed by my Mac Home and Macintosh HD. I don’t think the NAS can be seen on the desktop. I would appreciate some help

Have you mounted them as SMB shares?

There’s similar KBs from Synology to connect via other network protocols (e.g. NFS)

No I haven’t; thank you for the advice on that subject. I will get to it.

Well, that was easy! Many thanks for your assistance, both.

My next task is to associate the server with my Smart TVs, is that as straightforward?

Sign both your server and the app on your smart tv in using the same Plex account, done.

No problem pal

May I just ask, do I need the MacBook open all the time to serve from it (I assume yes!)

Yes. The server needs to be running for any Plex client to access media from it.

Thank you. It’s making more sense to me now…

I can see why people have ‘headless’ Mac Minis for serving, saves on having to wake the MacBook up..

Doesn’t even need to be a Mini. If you’re technically inclined, you can get a cheap NUC and install Ubuntu Linux to run your server.
