Plex Noob Questions

I am interested in Plex but still confused on a few things:

Here is what I want to do - store movies and music on a NAS, and play them back on my TV.

From what I gather Plex is a convienient GUI that improves that experience...

Now, Do I install the Plex Server on the NAS or install it on my Macbook? I know its possible to install on both, but I am unclear as to which would be better for my needs. I dont plan on accessing the media outside my home or on my phone very much, if at all. Does the Plex server need to be installed where the files are located?

Since my TV is not smart, would I have to buy an Apple TV or Roku to access Plex?

Current Hardware

  • Macbook Pro
  • iPhone
  • Airport extreme wireless router,
  • Marantz 5007 receiver with Airplay
  • Definitive Speakers
  • Xbox360
  • Panasonic TC42S2 - dumb TV

I want to get a NAS drive but havent purchased it yet, waiting to figure out where Plex fits into that.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I noticed this topic was in the wrong section, moved it to the Mac section

I'm not running a Mac but here's what I did.

I installed Plex Media Server on an I7 workstation running Windows 7.

I have 2 separate NAS boxes in my house. 1 that I use for my photography and music and 1 just for my home theater movies.

Plex server runs on the I7 box and I just mapped drives to each of the NAS boxes.

I then installed the Plex Home Theater client to my HTPC, my desktop (work) PC and my laptop. I also have the Plex App loaded on my Galaxy S4 phone.

Works like a charm for everything. I leave the I7 running all the time since it not only hosts my Plex Sever but also my Cloud Server so I always have access to my movies, music and cloud.
