MacOS Plex Server Crashing

That’s the last version I was on prior to downgrading out of frustration on a M1 Studio… YMMV.

I was trying to avoid having to start fresh. I have tried installing different versions of the Media Server but to no avail. Backed up files and did a clean install and it launched, but then I quit the program and put my backup files back in place and it started crashing yet again.

Is there a way I can determine what file is causing the crash upon launch? Anyone have any ideas?

Having the exact same issue. Is there a way to install version 1.31.2.6810 without having to go through a long process of backing up / rebuilding the library or is that par for the course? Never had to downgrade before and I’m a little worried I’m in for hours and hours of work to get this working again. Thanks for the help.

Just run the older installer, you won’t loose anything

Yup, that’s what I ended up doing and it worked fine and it hasn’t crashed since. Thanks for your help.

My server began crashing last night, Mac mini running OS X Catalina. I tried downgrading the PMS to an older version, I get the same result in which I click on the media server app, the Plex Icon appears briefly at the top of the status bar and vanishes, as does the message “Plex Server wants to grant access to incoming connections.” The dialog box disappears before I can click “Allow,” the PMS is already set to accept incoming via my security settings. Anyone else experiencing the same hiccup?

I also have this issue. I setup a script (via automater) to restart the service after crashes since none of the recent installers solved it.
I also recommend backing up the database manually more often than the automatic 3 days as the frequent crashes has caused database corruption and I’ve to restore.

I haven’t been able to use anything later than PMS 1.30.1 with any degree of stability. Most of the newer updates crash on launch or within seconds/minutes. I have to keep restoring 1.30.1 from my backup and we’re then golden until the next update attempt.
I note the 1.30.1 shows as Application (Apple Silicon) not Application (Universal). Not sure if that is the issue. Really hoping it gets fixed one of these days.
Plex HTPC (1.44.1) is also acting up now - it hangs if the Mac sleeps. No biggie. Force Quit and relaunch and all’s good. But I am concerned that the quality of the software seems to be diminishing. Is this due to the recent ‘restructuring’?

I have added you to the users that are trying out development build 1.32.7.7361

My server is back online after restoring a backup database, the current db was most likely corrupted. I used the earliest backup in my file list to be be safe. Glad this worked and grateful to Plex support as the steps to restore were very helpful! Thanks for planting that ‘backup’ seed in my head which helped to rescue my Plex server without having to rebuild/reinstall the OS!

The fix has now been released in the 1.32.6 beta - version 1.32.6.7468. - beta only with Plex Pass. I just installed it and giving it a shot.

Updated my OS today and it’s been up and down all day. (I have a restart script)

My Mac mini server has also been “crashing”, or just the server app quitting. This has been happening for several weeks. No update has fixed it.

You are running on 1.32.5.7516-8F4248874

As mentioned earlier a fix for crashes on Mac OS was released in beta 1.32.6
Latest beta has the fix

  • (Mac) Transcoder crashes would cause PMS to exit (#14414)

If issue persists after updating to 1.32.6 or later, please provide debug server logs captured after one of your crashes

Great, thanks for the info! I don’t usually download the betas, but that’s good to know that a fix is in there. Thank you!

Hello, my server is still crashing (quitting silently, actually) after each playback, running 1.32.6.7521 on a Mac mini M1. As soon as I stop playback, PMS quits itself.

Last playback session started at 21:14.

Edit: now that I think of it, in contrast with other users’ experiences, I didn’t notice any problems before upgrading today to MacOs 13.6. I don’t know if it’s related.

Can you tell me what do you have specified in server settings for the Transcoder Temp Directory ? You can see the value in server advanced settings for the Transcoder
and also in terminal - by executing this command

defaults read com.plexapp.plexmediaserver TranscoderTempDirectory

The crashes appear to be whilst trying to create a temporary transcoding folder within that path

and if there is a valid absolute path specified, could you check the ownership and permissions

Update 1 :
Also noticed this file not found error

Sep 25, 2023 21:14:25.945 [0x1e0e76080] ERROR - Exception analyzing media file '/Volumes/media/Italia/Fratelli di Crozza/Fratelli.Di.Crozza.S14E01.1080p.WEB-DL.AAC2.0.H.264.mkv' (Could not parse /Volumes/media/Italia/Fratelli di Crozza/Fratelli.Di.Crozza.S14E01.1080p.WEB-DL.AAC2.0.H.264.mkv (error=-2): No such file or directory)

Are the discs attached / mounted correctly ?
Could be similar issue with the transcoder temp directory path

Update 2:

Have you copied the Plex Media Server database from a windows setup ?
I noticed this in one of the logs

Sep 25, 2023 19:13:41.554 [0x1e0e76080] DEBUG - * Scanning Z:\Calibration
Sep 25, 2023 19:13:41.554 [0x1e0e76080] DEBUG - * Marking media not available in Z:\Calibration

May be your transcoder temp directory path is a windows drive path !!

Thank you for getting back to me.

First things first,

Can you tell me what do you have specified in server settings for the Transcoder Temp Directory ? You can see the value in server advanced settings for the Transcoder
and also in terminal - by executing this command

The directory is empty, funny thing is that I have never (I use Plex since 2008) specified a default directory.
Also running the command in terminal reports:
The domain/default pair of (com.plexapp.plexmediaserver, TranscoderTempDirectory) does not exist

About the file not found, this is due to a recent delete of some media files and I haven’t emptied trash yet.
About the Z:\Calibration, yes at a certain stage I moved to windows and back to Mac (last time 5/6 years ago) and for a period of time I had both mounts (\Volumes\Media and Z:) for each library. Then I cleared the windows path from the library settings but this one escaped, as I don’t use it anymore. I will clear it.

Anyway, I think that in one of the recent releases PMS emptied the default transcoder directory entry, as I haven’t been into PMS settings for months (and everything was working until a few days ago).

What is the standard directory used for the transcoder, so that I can revert to the proper setting?

Update
I have recreated Cache/Transcoder in my “Application Support/Plex Media Server” folder, tested it a couple of times (I always use direct play pretty much on all my devices lately) so I forced it, it created the temporary session files and then cleaned up. Now let’s see if PMS stays up.

There is no need to add the transcoder Temp Directory to the Root Directory.

Just add the path to your Documents in your admin account.

Easy access if required.

Thanks, so far so good. PMS hasn’t shut down in the past hour, which is promising. I think the issue is that the entry was cleared somehow during a software update (either PMS or MacOS 13.6).
