Server Version#: 1.24.1.4931
I have 2 versions for many of the movies in my libraries - one 1080p x265 HDR encode (sourced from UHD) and one 1080p x264 encode, for older devices that don’t support HDR and HEVC, and web-viewing (regularly transcoding x265 to x264 seems like a bad idea).
I want Plex to play by default the HDR version on devices that support it, and the x264 version on devices that don’t.
From what I noticed, it currently just picks the movie by bitrate and internet connection. It will match the highest quality bitrate that’s playable with the available internet speed.
The issue with that is that in some cases, x265 encodes have a lower bitrate than the x264 ones (mainly in animated movies), so it just always plays the x264 non-HDR by default.
I know there’s an option to create a separate library for x265 encodes, but that’s really inconvenient and confusing for non-techy members on my Plex server.
Would be happy to hear suggestions about what I can do to fix this issue.
