Making Thumbnails makes my CPU works at 100%

Server Version#: 3.95.1
Player Version#: Webclient

It does not do it all the time. Once in a while I add new media and the dashboard shows the CPU at 90-100% and it just loops not adding any thumbnails. I have to CTRL+ALT+DELT and end task to get it too stop. I restart the server and its fine. Just worried if I miss it, one day it will melt my CPU.

This is normal, generating the in movie thumnails is the snapshot of every point in the movie creating screen shots and allowing for a popup thumb wherever the cursor is on the timeline of the movie.

this is extremely CPU intensive and if you have few threads or slow CPU, it can stay pinned at 100% for hours.

I went from a 2core i7 3.4ghz running 100% for 6 or more hours a day to a 4 core 8 thread I7 server and it is so fast its negligible

I have an: Intel i7-7700 @ 3.6GHz

But its good to know this is normal and why its doing what its doing. With what you told me I think I know why its different. I have switch from using 1080p to 4K HDR so I guess popup thumbs for that will take some processing? lol

If desired, you can disable thumbnail generation on a per-library basis.

Edit the library, choose Advanced, deselect “Enable video preview thumbnails.”

You can also schedule when thumbnails are generated.

In Settings -> Library there are options for video preview & chapter thumbnails. You can choose Never, Scheduled, or Scheduled & when media is added.

In Settings -> Scheduled Tasks you can schedule start/stop times for such maintenance items.

This is what I did, from 2am - 2PM I would have the schedule go to town on my CPU with the thumb creations, and all other tasks… worked out great during non-used time to have it optimizing the server and use its resources during off peak hours…

Now my CPU is so fast it doesnt take much time at all so it just sits there sad not working :frowning:

Thanks all the info and help =-)
