Media folders management

Server Version#:3.83.1
Player Version#:

Hi Guys!

I have a doubt about the way PMS works with media folders and files: as far as I understood the server scan the folders and create a DB of the library with all the information, artwork etc., so that when I search for something, I’m actually working with the DB and not with the files itself.

I would like to organize all my files that go through Plex in the best way to obtain that the update of the library is the fastest and lean when I add or remove a media to the folder.

In my case I have about 3000 movies and 40.000 photos.
Since now I only added few files just to try Plex and see how it works, and I found it amazing, it’s time to complete the plex experience with all the files
About the photos they are already divided in subfolders by date
All the movie files have been renamed to match to the PMS way

My finally question is:
Is it better to put all the movies in the same unique folder or to divide in more subfolders, that will be added to the same library? or is it even better divide the movies in more libraries?

If someone wants to share how his library and files has been organized…

Thanks in advance

Giorgio

My rules for videos:

  • Avoid to have more than 1,000 items per folder.
  • As soon as you want to use external files, like subtitles, posters or movies extras, use one subfolder per movie title.
  • On Windows, don’t put items directly into the root folder of a drive. Always create a folder (e.g. Movies)

If you have over 1000 movies, distribute them into several “movies” folders and include these individually into your library:

Use the minimum Plex naming rules for the folder names, e.g.

/ Movies
   / Movie 1 Title (year)
      Movie 1 Title (year) - 1080p [DTS-eng-subs-bla].mkv
      Movie 1 Title (year) - 1080p [DTS-eng-subs-bla].ita.srt
      poster.jpg
