Media in another synology unit

Server Version#: Synology Ds214se
Player Version#:

Good morning,
I currently own a synology ds214se, which can’t run PLEXm properly.
I want to buy another model, probably a ds220+, and use it as a PLEX server.
My intention is to keep the old ds214se and just storage of media (movies, music, photos), in the same local network.
If I install PLEX server in the new ds220+, can PLEX take read and use the media from both the the ds220+ and the ds214se?
As a preference, the contents in PLEX would not be shown as separate servers. So if I name a folder “movies 4k” in both NAS, the Plex player would show just the combination of both NAS.

Thank you!

Yes. The new Synology can mount the old Synology’s folders at startup.
Once mounted, PMS on the new Synology will reach across the network and access the files just as if they were resident.

Here’s what it looks like (NFS is best for this; server - server)

To use this:

  1. Decide where to mount the media , creating a shared folder or new mount folder as needed
  2. File Station → Tools → Mount Remote Folder → NFS

On the old NAS, make certain everyone can read the media (should already be the default)

Thank you for the quick and precise reply.
This confirms that I can go ahead with the configuration that I wanted. Upgrading to Plex Pass will be the next step.

I wouldn’t have tried the “mount remote folder” option. I will see what configuration goes best.

Off topic: Nice to see “Alan Parsons” as one of your demo folders. It’s one of my favourite groups

To make this easy, You can use that same NFS mount technique.

  1. Create a temporary share (Old-Plex)

  2. Mount the old Plex share in it

  3. Copy “Library” from the old to the new (drag & drop)

  4. When it completes, Right-click → Properties → set the new owner to user plex and make certain to Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files

  5. If your media is going to be in different locations on this new NAS, we’ll need to do some prep work before copying over the metadata. Please let me know if the new structure will be the same or not.

PS: I have a , I think, nice vinyl collection.

Thanks again.
in my case it will not be like that because i currently don’t use plex because my Synology ds214se is soooo basic that it can’t even index. So i won’t need to transfer libraries. i will just create a whole new library telling plex where to look.
But your advices are very welcome for me to think the best structure and organization from the beginning.
Thanks again, Jorge
