Media player audio setting keep resetting

Windows Desktop Plex App keeps resetting the audio device setting to auto select device instead of my receiver and that makes the pass through of all Dolby options reset as well. This means every time I open Plex I have to change this setting.

Don’t switch off the TV/Receiver before closing Plex Player.
Don’t open Plex Player before switching on the TV/Receiver.

I never do that anyway

I have to tum on my avr and tv before I turn on my PC always

that’s how I get my sound as it goes through my gpu hdmi

there has to be a way to make the setting stick somehow like a auto reg file that checks the registry when it opens and restores the settings

there’s a lot of users with this issue and it’s been like this for a long time

It already does that. If you explicitly select the sound interface in the preferences of the Plex app, it will remember it and try to use it in the next session. If the interface is not available for some reason, the app will fall back to the current “default” sound interface.

There have been reports about some HDMI output drivers, which make it appear to the Windows system and apps, that it is a different output every time the system is restarted. That is a bug in the driver software and you should definitely try and find an updated driver software version, see if that issue is fixed there.

It does save the settings, but they will stick for a bit

Few times of opening the app

Then will out of the blue change back to auto

I’m using hql nvidia drivers always

There has to be a way to hard code it

This has been going on for 2-3 years

And many driver updates

You mean downloaded from Microsoft? Definitely try those available from nvidia.com

  1. Open the nVidia control panel (either by right-click on the desktop background, or from the windows task tray area).
  2. 3D settings → manage 3D settings → App specific settings
  3. add Plex HTPC.exe to the list of apps.
  4. Now scroll down to “Power Management” and select “Maximum Performance”.

The aim is to prevent the HMDI port from ever getting powered down while Plex HTPC or Plex for Desktop is running.

It can’t hurt to control proper seating of the HDMI plug on both ends of the cable. Maybe experiment with a different HDMI cable, if you have one available.

You can also try and reset the settings of the Plex app. Delete the file plex.ini from
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Plex HTPC.
(Plex for Desktop uses the path C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Plex
instead.)
After doing so, you’ll need to sign in the app again, and redo all the user settings in it – including the sound interface selection.

I get the drivers from nvidia or the nvidia app in windows

in the nvidia control panel I do have the power management set to maximum performance

as I have a rtx5070 Ti card so that goes without saying

but I will make a new app profile and try it out

I will try your suggestions and report back

Thank you

I don’t the plex htpc directory

only the plex

[file deleted]

this is what it looks like

Don’t post the file. It contains a key to access your server.

Now you really have to delete it, unless you want others misuse it.
Do also delete “Plex HTPC” from here, to make this token useless to others: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/other

OK, thank you I didn’t realize that

I did what you said

I was just trying to show you the INI file that information was in there

I did like you asked and I had to reset all of the settings

2 reboots later it reverted back to auto again

and the AVR and TV were never turned off at all

Are you starting Plex HTPC automatically, immediately after bootup/login?
If so, see if the issue stops if you wait longer between login and starting Plex HTPC.

No, it’s at random times after startup 5-10 minutes or so

I’ve been paying more attention since I posted this and it seems it resets every reboot

if I go back in and click on the player sub tab in settings it will show auto again

if I click on the Onkyo avr it will repopulate the rest automatically for some reason now though

Have you any other suggestions to fix this problem

or am I sol

Please Advise

Did you delete the plex.ini file at some point?

yes ,I did,I just had to set the settings again

Have you tried “Exclusive Audio”?

I’ve tried it on and off, but I don’t remember if it had any bearing try it again and see what happens

I know that that feature will take the volume out of my hands on my computer and I’ll have to use the remote for the receiver, but that’s not an issue

OK, we may have come across an answer here

After I enabled exclusive audio,It seems that made it stick for some reason . I rebooted my PC 10 or 15 times since then plus I have turned it off and on and it seems to be staying with Settings that I need.

It seems to have worked for me. I don’t know if anybody else is gonna have the same luck it’s worth a start

Thank you
