Media server stuck on "Starting"?

Hi again,

I checked the logs of my Plex Server Media and here is the details :

Any idea of what could be the problem ? For information, if I do a clean install without using my old "Plug-in Support" folder, it works but in this case I loose all my library informations.

Any idea to how start Plex Server again with my Library data ?

Thanks

PS : I resolved finally the problem using another thread I found here : https://forums.plex.tv/topic/17668-resolved-database-corruption-causes-pms-to-crash/

Mountain lion os running on the 2012 mac mini. Updated to the latest version of PMS and I'm having this issue now too. I deleted the bundles and it still just freezes on "server is starting...". The only way I can quit PMS is by killing the process in the activity monitor. Anyone able to help out? Very frustrating.

Hate to add my voice to the complaints. But I downloaded Yosemite and all was good. Then today I updated and now I'm stuck on "Server is starting" pinwheel.

Any help would be great. In the middle of a few TV series and need my fix - lol.

For what's worth I had the same issue with the latest Plex build on Yosemite.  As suggested by others I could downgrade my Plex version and life was fine.  I started going through and making sure there were no known issues and when trying to use the 'Optimize' feature in the previous version it would return an error about my database being corrupt.  Once this issue was resolved and the 'Optimize' feature ran without errors I was able to update with no problems.

Used the following steps resolved my issue:

I'm on Yosemite, had the issues of not being able to upgrade Plex to the latest build, and once i managed to get the latest version installed, it was "Stuck on Starting".

Ran the commands that were linked above, and even though SQL came back with no DB issue (Status: Ok), i managed to install the latest version of Plex (after doing the above commands) without any problems.

I didn't bother with this part though...

Prior to restarting your Server, you should also delete or backup and move elsewhere the following two files:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases/com.plexapp.plugins.library.db-shm
  • ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases/com.plexapp.plugins.library.db-wal

Otherwise, simply deleting that com.plexapp.plugins.library.db database file and restarting the Plex Media Server will restore

your server to a fresh install state. (i.e. You will lose your existing libraries and need to recreate them, but you won't be affecting your content itself.)

FWIW: I've been using PMS for nearly 5 years now, I love it, but i've never had it update itself naturally from the 'update' menu :/

hello i have done all of these thing and even installed plex media server and download it again and i just will not start ?????? please some one help me

Hmm, mine was working fine for a few days post Yosemite, but now I can't connect remotely to my PMS.  I wonder if it's pinwheeling/starting at home right now..

Since the last couple of plexpass versions and with this general release my server seems to hang on starting or starts and then hangs shortly after.  I have optimized the database, cleaned the bundles and still very erratic behaviour.  now when it does work it seems to be slow when selecting sections and appears to drop in and out of connection

I have attached the server log and any help would be much appreciated

You do not by any chance happen to have a computer username that is containing a non-english character?

I have now reverted back to Version 0.9.9.16 and all is working fine.  Seems to be a bug in that release

Everything has been working fine until it just didn't work at all. Okay, so I was stuck on starting.. Got crazy trying to figure out why. Deleted everything that had anything to do with Plex several times and reinstalled it. Still forever starting and then eventually it had to be forced closed. I removed all profiles accept the active one on the mac after reading something about that somewhere and reinstalled it again. Still not working and now I have one more setback - now when I try to start up it starts (icon flashing fast in upper menu) and then dies, nothing more. I am very close to erase everything on my hard drive and start over all new- aka going crazy over here. Someone who has a clue?

I'm running 10.6.8 on an old iMac..

Hi Atrus - could you please have a look at this windows thread and add a comment regarding the user name potential issues. This thread has been resolved but there were 2 changes made so not sure which fixed it; removing the foreign character in the username or re-installing Plex Media Server.exe back in a default C:\ Program Files (x86) folder structure rather than D:\Program Files

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/125797-unable-to-complete-pms-installation/?p=751998

Thanks

i've had the same problem with 0.9.11. I've downgraded back to 0.9.9.14 and the server worked again.

I've just launched 0.9.9.11 again after i'd downgraded and the server went up like normal.

However, when the server was stck in "Starting", i did use Activity Monitor.app in order to analyze the process. It appeared that most threads were waiting for a pthread mutex, which looked a lot like a deadlock. Even more so, when i tried to quit the server while it was in that state. Because then the main-thread also waited for the mutex and Activity Monitor showed the app in red, because the main-thread did't consume events anymore.

I'm sure the developers can make some sense out of the spin-dumps that Activity Monitor.app can produce. I didn't save mine to disk and i can't reproduce the problem anymore, so if someone else still has the problem, please open Activity Monitor.app from /Applications/Utilities, then select Plex Media Server from the list (you can also use the search field in the toolbar to filter the list). Then choose analyze from the toolbar (may be hidden in a popup menu).

The app will then analyze the server and after some seconds it'll show a report. Just save the report and attach it to a post.

Hi

I have followed these instructions and deleted both the Framework.bundle", and "System.bundle and starting plex results in the same stuck on starting screen and problem.

What else is needed to solve this?

Thanks,

Hi

I have followed these instructions and deleted both the Framework.bundle", and "System.bundle and starting plex results in the same stuck on starting screen and problem.

What else is needed to solve this?

Thanks,

Restart the Mac and Plex Media Server and then wait 5 minutes and try localhost:32400/web in a browser and if still the same, find the server log files

 Plex Media Server.log

 and

PMS Plugin Logs\com.plexapp.system.log and upload through 'More Reply Options' and Attach Files

See Plex Media Server log files for location of logs

Please help. I am NOT on Yosemite; I am not even on Mavericks. I am on Mac 10.8.5.

My Plex was working just fine 2 days ago, and I have not changed anything. Then went on today (via Roku, which has worked like a champ for years), but was not seeing the new stuff I thought I'd put in my queue.

Did some moving around on my computer, still not seeing it.. then noticed that I have been getting the spinning wheel of "Server is Starting." All day.

On the website, when I checked, I was seeing a message, "We're sorry, we're not seeing that (Mac Mini) server." Huh?? It even said it was last accessed 2 days ago.

So....I removed it (probably stupidly), and have downloaded a new Plex server app, too. No help. Now I can't figure out how to get Plex to see ANYTHING.

I re-start the new downloaded server app, and nothing.  Have looked thru troubleshooting till I'm blue in the face, cannot figure out what to do.

Help??

Thanks,

   ~ Beth

ps: I also did the Finder search for ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/, and am getting no results. There is no Plex Media Server in my Library/Application Support file.

pps: I am not super technical, so have pity.

You are looking in the wrong Library. The first path you mention is correct, but you are likely checking the wrong path because you are manually clicking your way to it. The tilde sign means "your user". So you should be looking in the hidden Library.

Go to Finder. Hit CMD-SHIFT-G. Paste this path into the field that pops up:

~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-ins/

Hit enter. You are now in the correct path.

hey guys,

I updated plex the other day and it stopped working. I found the forum, and deleted the framework and the other file. But it didn't work. Then I downgraded to 9.9.16 which is also stuck on 'Starting' So now what should I do?

Thank you, Plex Ninja.

Okay, so now I've found those files. Deleted them (several times). Deleted the server app. Downloaded it again. Same thing. Tried putting localhost:32400/web in my Firefox browser, it never connects, just clocks. (What is that supposed to do, anyway?)

I see the logs y'all are talking about but have no idea what I'm supposed to look at.

Now what??  Thanks.
