I was not talking about stutter. Don’t know how you came up with that…
It’s fluid because it’s 50hz lol. Not the way it’s supposed to be watched. I don’t want the plex client double the refresh rate. I understand there is nothing wrong for it to do that. But the show is native 25 and I want to watch it in 25hz not 50. That’s stupid…
It’s not stupid. You are considering only your scenario. Have you thought about the scenarios of other people with different types of displays?
Such scenarios would be users viewing content with PC displays, home projectors or plasma screens. These types of displays can be natively capable of displaying 25.00fps at 25Hz. It would be untolerable flicker for most people.
Even when you go to the movie cinemaplex, film is not projected at 24fps. Each frame of the film is shown in a 2:2 or 3:3 pulldown cadence and never just 24fps. Again you stated, “the difference is night and day.” Please reitterrate that difference so that we understand what to look for here.
I stated “fluid and no stutter” because those are high level generic adjectives that are commonly used when people complain about framerate issues.
Additionally on a LG OLED CX, the panel will never show it to you at 25.00Hz. In PAL land, the panel will be upsampling 25.00Hz input to 100.00Hz–no matter what you feed it.
This has been a problem for a long time. Every 25fps file I have plays back at 50fps on the Shield, which leads to audio sync and stuttering issues. This is with the refresh rate switching option enabled obv. No idea why Plex doesn’t play back 25fps correctly. It manages everything else…
Anyway, I have found that MRMC (a Kodi fork with better Plex integration) plays these files back perfectly. As with the Plex client, you’ll need to go in and change settings for refresh rate switching, but I’ve not had any problems with 25fps files,
If you’re having stuttering/sync issues, that’s a different issue than this thread. You should raise a separate issue and provide logs. My 25fps content plays as expected at 50Hz on my Shield.
I just revisited some known problematic footage, and it appears some of the issues have been fixed in recent updates.
This file for example, LG: New York HDR UHD 4K Demo | 4K Media
previously wouldn’t play using Plex on the Shield. It would switch to 50fps, then buffer for a while, and then make it about 5 seconds in before giving up.
MRMC would play back instantly at 25fps.
The question still remains. Why doesn’t Plex play back 25fps content at 25fps? I haven’t seen it do this to any other frame rate. You can argue that it doesn’t make a difference, and in terms of what you see, I agree. But that’s not the point.
I can only assume, as per a previous comment, that Plex does it to avoid the possibility that the display doesn’t support 25fps.
But surely there’s a better way than just forcing 50fps?
How about an option to specifically say that my display supports 25fps, or an additional ‘always’ in the refresh rate switching option?
Just ran a test to see if I can force Plex to play back at 25fps.
Set the Shield output to 25hz (which obv looks terrible, but anyway…) and turned off Refresh Rate Switching (still switches to 50fps if left on).
Hmm, I just played that 4k 25fps file at 50Hz without stuttering or sync issues. It looks the same as the playback at 25Hz on my TV. Which shield do you have? I have the 2019 Pro.
As Achilles pointed out earlier in this thread, as long as the refresh rate is a multiple of the framerate, you should have smooth, synced playback. Also, 29.97/30fps plays back at 59.94/60Hz, so it’s not just 25fps->50Hz either.
You might also want to test without DV enabled (if it currently is). The required 4:2:2 12-bit for it can cause issues when greater than 30Hz on some setups.
That file plays back fine on current version. It was a few months back it wouldn’t play at all, and I’ve not revisited since so that was a nice surprise.
I agree that you SHOULD have smooth, synced playback, and it may well be an issue with my setup (Shield Pro 2019 → Denon AVR → Optoma Cinemax P2 Projector), but everything else I play is fine. 4k HDR, 1080p, 1080i, and even some 720p stuff (using the Shield’s upscaling) are all synced, no frame drops. It’s awesome.
It’s only 25fps content that has an issue, and that issue goes away if you force 25fps playback (either via MRMC, or the aforementioned tedious method!)
I just tested 30fps footage, and you’re right. It does playback at 60fps, but it’s fine. No problems.
Will try experimenting with different colour settings. Hadn’t actually considered that. Will let you know how I get on.
