Server Version#: Plex Web 4.34.4 on TrueNAS 13.0 Stable
Player Version#:
I have recorded a TV series and this is not in any TV database.
It is shown on as “episode #”.
Is there a way to add metadata in a text file that at least would
add the title?
I read about “.plexmatch” but I did not see that you can add the title using that.
What are good articles about this?
Using Plex or some other software?
TV shows and Movies which are recorded by Plex will inherit the metadata from the EPG.
So I assume you recorded it with some other software.
No, .plexmatch cannot supply metadata. It can only make Plex understand a deviating folder structure/deviating file names, in order for Plex to identify/match the show and download metadata about it.
There is no support for .nfo files in Plex.
However, if you organize and name the files as required for a tv show in Plex, Plex will at least take the folder name as the overall show’s title.
If you are talking about the episode titles, there is no way to import them into Plex. Except if your files were in mp4 format. Then you could embed the title as a meta tag, which Plex could read.
Recorded to Harddisk, DVD created and then converted to MP4 using Handbrake.
Is there s good app to add tags?
Preferably under linux on the command line
I’m sure there are, but that is beyond my field of expertise.
Never tried it myself, but
Just out of curiosity, if you need to manually add information like the title, why not edit it directly in Plex? Why do you want metadata in text files? Do you already have metadata available in a text format, such as NFO files?
Editing directly in Plex is the worst of all options. Because those data live only in Plex’s own database. If you move the files, or lose your Plex data folder or get a corrupt database, you can do all the editing work again.
So it makes much more sense to embed as much as possible into the media files, or place files beside the video files (if possible, like with posters or song lyrics).
Finally got to work on this.
I tried manually changing the title from Windows by changing the empty title in the file properties to what I want.
Tried analyzing again. but that did not work.
Also tried “Update Metadata”, same result.
The title remains “Episode 6”.
The library is setup like this:
Scanner: Plex TV Series.
Agent: Plex TV Series
Sorting: Library standard
Certification Country: United States
Series Order: TheTVDB
Use season titles: UNCHECKED
Use Original titles: UNCHECKED
Prefer Original metadata: UNCHECKED (maybe this need to change?)
Find Extra Material: CHECKED
Just use trailers: UNCHECKED
I tried changing “Prefer Original metadata”
to CHECKED, to no effect.
What happens if I add the show to “theTVDB.com”?
Will Plex update from that?
If there is a delay from updating TheTVDB, how long delay should I expect?
Is the file a mp4 / m4v file? It works only with these.
You should use a dedicated tool, like mp3tag
The Windows file properties dialog is inadequate.
Should have an effect upon “Refresh Metadata”.
You can try that. But make sure that it isn’t a show that’s already in there. (Keep in mind that shows are often produced internationally, and can be re-titled for broadcasting in some national markets.)
The delay for a new show is at least 72 hours.
If this show is not also present on TheMovieDB.org, you want to include the ID number of TheTVDB in the folder name.
/TV Shows

It can be found here:
Yes, using Handbrake to create MP4 from recorded broadcasting burned to DVD.
Installed mp3tag, and that seemed to see the titles I added using Windows properties.
I added a title using Mp3tag to an episode, but after that Plex did not use the new title. Still “Episode 9”.
I tried “analyze” and “refresh meta-data”.
Does it matter which version of Plex I am using?
Running TrueNAS and a Plex plugin v 1.23.2.4656.
It is in my summer house, so it was some time before I updated the version. Does it matter?
In addition, My PC is running Plex Web 4.57.4.
Added the program to theTVdb.com and the January 2024 episodes.
ID: 452126. Also updated the top directory name including " - {tvdb-452126}" See if that helps in a week.
It is a pity that PLEX does not store manual matching in text files.
I have two servers that I manually sync using a disk pack.
It is a pain.
This version is 3 years old.
Yes, very much so. We could be hunting issues which have long been solved in a newer version.
What are the selected Scanner and Agent in the properties of the library, on the Advanced tab?
Upgraded my TrueNAS to 13.0-U6.2 (LTS) but this seems to have a problem with upgrading the plex media server plugin.
Something wants 13.2 and is only getting 13.1.
Also tried to install a new plugin, but same problem.
The TrueNAS 13.3 is considered unstable.
Looks like I will be stuck with the current version of the plexmediaserver for the time beeing.
The Scanner is Plex TV Series
Agent is Plex TV Series.
