Migrating from Apple Photos

Server Version#: 1.16.2.1297
Player Version#: n/a as of yet

Hi all, my interweb searches seem to be getting extremely…muddy.

I am beginning the process of migrating away from Apple Photos to, well, anything else. I’ve got 23K photos geo/facial/otherwise tagged since 2006, started in the good-old-days of iPhoto and then living in the unmanageable nightmare of Apple Photos. I am looking for anyone who has experience related to my quest. What their workflow was If they were successful, and where they went if they were not.

I have a Plex server running on a Synology 1019+. My clients would eventually be a my Macbook Pro, iPad, AppleTV 4th Gen, and iPhone.

From what I can tell, my workflow from Photos should be exporting Unmodified Originals along with the XMP sidecar file containing all the relevant tags. I do not yet have a Plex Pass to test the geo feature. If there is a complete online reference I have not been able to find it, one that specifically works with migrating from Apple Photos to Plex. My understanding is that I should be able to just create a library and import the media with companion sidecar files. Am I correct?

I have the same question. Fill me in when there’s an answer please.

The short answer I have found is there is no easy answer. I am still trying to decide which direction to go, photostation on my Synology NAS or Plex. With Plex you need a Plex Pass to get the Geo Tags to work. Apple’s feature, Faces, does not come over well in either solution. Faces get imported as tags if they come over at all. It looks like folks in our situation will have to rework our entire libraries. Apple’s solution used to just work. Now it works how Apple wants it to work which is not workable. I will try to post more when I really start tackling this. At the moment I’m migrating my movie and tv show collection.
